Overview

As a Substitute Bus Driver, you'll operate various types of buses, including school buses and transit vehicles, while adhering to all safety standards and traffic laws. Duties
- Safely operate school buses, transit buses, or paratransit vehicles to transport passengers along designated routes or on-demand trips
- Ensure passenger safety by following transportation safety regulations, emergency response procedures, and vehicle codes at all times
- Assist passengers with special needs, including wheelchair assistance and senior care, ensuring comfort and security during transit
- Conduct pre-trip inspections to verify vehicle condition, including checking brakes, lights, tires, and emergency equipment
- Respond promptly to traffic changes, road hazards, or route adjustments to maintain schedule integrity
- Communicate clearly with passengers using effective language skills; multilingual abilities are a plus
- Follow school policies regarding student discipline and passenger conduct to promote a respectful environment
Experience
- Proven experience driving commercial vehicles such as school buses or transit buses with a valid driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle type (e.g., CDL if required)
- Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle operation procedures, and transportation safety regulations at the state and local levels
- Experience working with children or seniors is highly desirable; patience and excellent customer service skills are essential
- Ability to respond quickly and effectively during emergencies using CPR and first aid skills; familiarity with emergency stop procedures is required
- Strong communication skills in English; multilingual abilities can enhance passenger interactions
- Physical capability for heavy lifting when assisting passengers or handling equipment during vehicle inspections
- Prior experience in transportation roles involving student discipline or passenger management is advantageous
