POSITION TITLE: Principal DEPARTMENT: BES Elementary
REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Superintendent, responsible for directing and coordinating the educational, administrative, and counseling activities of the elementary grades K-5. Communicates the commitment to the established policies and procedures to the staff and the students.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Serves as building manager and supervisor of Berlin Elementary School.
Provides educational leadership in curriculum development, training, and instruction.
Administers the school and its instructional program in all its facets.
Implements State and Federal laws and regulations, State Board of Education Policies, Minimum Standards for school approval, which have the power of law, local board policies, and administrative regulations under the direction of the Superintendent of Schools.
Supervises and evaluates school staff; provides assistance as needed.
Assists in recruiting, screening, training, hiring, and assigning school staff.
Coordinates the school’s pupil personnel services.
Monitors the full range of the school’s co-curricular activities.
Assumes overall responsibility for the supervision, attendance, and conduct of the students.
Evaluates and advises the implementation of the curriculum based on community needs and the district curriculum review cycle, as determined by the administrative team.
Supervises and maintains appropriate records and submits required reports.
Reviews for approval of teachers’ professional development plans.
Assumes responsibility for the school grounds and oversees building maintenance.
Participates in Administrative Council meetings, School Board meetings, and other school-related meetings as required or appropriate.
Oversees all aspects of the school’s public relations activities.
Participates in school-related parent group activities.
Communicates with the school community regularly, including press releases, monthly newsletters, and other communications.
Prepares and submits the annual budget for the school, including maintenance contracts, extracurricular organizations, office supplies, dues and fees, multimedia, technology, personnel, instructional materials and textbooks, staff development, furniture, and equipment.
Encourages the implementation of technology.
Maintains the discipline of students.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field.
Participates in school and community committees and projects.
Performs other related duties as required.
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/ TRAINING REQUIRED:
Duties require knowledge of curriculum development, evaluation, school administration, and supervision equivalent to completion of a Master’s degree and five years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certification in Administration from the State of New Hampshire.
Expert knowledge of all relevant statutes and regulations as well as monitoring and reporting requirements.
Leadership, planning, negotiating, financial management, supervisory, and organizational skills.
Ability to think strategically and to develop relevant and realistic plans, programs, and goals for the elementary school.
Ability to recognize school-wide priorities and work cooperatively to support their accomplishment.
Ability to resolve problems and to develop relevant alternatives and recommendations.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; to establish positive public relations for the elementary school; and to interact effectively with a wide variety of people.
Expert listening skills
Working knowledge of modern office procedures, practices, and equipment, including the use of computers.
Genuine compassion for children and a passion for learning and teaching.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Supervises Teachers, Office Managers, Educational Assistants, and Custodians. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with School policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Normal office environment, not subject to extreme variations of temperature, odors, noise, etc.
Using a computer keyboard requires hand-eye coordination and finger dexterity.
Involves traveling to meetings, both in- and out-of-state, and may utilize one's own vehicle.
More than half of the time is spent in a normal office setting.
