Job Opportunity:
Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company has an exciting opportunity for an Underwriting Technician for our Property Division. The Underwriting Technician (UT) is integral to supporting our underwriting team, performing tasks as part of our underwriting process, which includes proposal and bind transactions for our property business. The UT will also perform underwriting activities associated with information gathering and rating for new business, renewals, and midterm changes. Additionally, the UT will assist with electronic file preparation on behalf of the Underwriter. The role is based in our Boston, MA office.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Partner with underwriters to support underwriting activities including preparing modeling requests and verifying property valuations.
- Create, organize, and maintain electronic files, while ensuring file integrity.
- Prepare, proof, and coordinate policy and endorsement issuance.
- Process financial transactions accurately and in a timely manner; verify policies are properly booked and invoices are issued correctly.
- Triage broker submissions to ensure all required underwriting data is complete, accurate, and compliant with underwriting guidelines.
- Assist with the preparation of quotes and binders for review with underwriters.
- Correspond with brokers; monitor outstanding documentation and proactively follow up to obtain required information.
- Laise between Underwriting, Operations, and other internal teams to facilitate efficient workflow and issue resolution.
- Maintain underwriting trackers, databases, and reporting tools to ensure accurate account status and workflow visibility.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Multitasking Ability: Proven capability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced underwriting environment.
- Organizational Skills: Exceptional attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records, documentation, and workflow tracking. Detail-oriented mindset.
- Technical Proficiency: Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and underwriting systems or databases.
- Communication Skills: Clear and professional verbal and written communication skills for internal collaboration and external correspondence.
- Analytical Thinking: Ability to review and interpret data, identify discrepancies, and support underwriters in risk assessment processes. Ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment and escalating issues when necessary.
- Team Collaboration: Comfortable working closely with underwriters, brokers, and other departments to ensure timely and accurate processing of submissions and endorsements.
- Growth Mindset: Self-motivated, eager to learn, and demonstrates initiative, with a proactive approach to development.
- Preferred qualifications include:
- Prior experience in an insurance or underwriting support role.
- Familiarity with property lines of business.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.

The base salary range for this position is from $60K - $70K along with annual bonus eligibility; a candidate’s salary is determined by their relevant skills, experience and location. We value our teammates – both their capabilities and character – as demonstrated by our amazing culture.
