Under the general supervision of the Dean of Science and Business, and working collaboratively with faculty across the college, this position supports student success in foundational and transitional mathematics courses by providing embedded, proactive academic coaching aligned with course instruction. This position focuses primarily on developmental and introductory college-level mathematics, with the flexibility to support students in higher-level courses, including calculus, as needed. The Part-Time Mentor & Math Coach works closely with faculty and academic support staff and is integrated directly into designated transitional math courses to promote persistence, confidence, and mathematical skill development. This role is crucial for enhancing student persistence and completion rates for students enrolled in math courses across the college.
This is a part-time, 18-hour-per-week position.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide embedded math coaching within assigned transitional and foundational math courses, supporting students during class activities, labs, or structured support sessions while promoting academic success, course engagement, and persistence.
Offer individualized and small-group academic support focused on core mathematical concepts, problem-solving strategies, academic planning, and study skills.
Support students enrolled in developmental, introductory, and gateway mathematics courses, with the ability to assist students in higher-level coursework (through calculus) as needed, monitoring academic progress and connecting students with resources that support achievement and retention.
Reinforce course-aligned content while emphasizing mathematical reasoning, confidence-building, and persistence strategies.
Collaborate with math faculty to align coaching support with course objectives, pacing, and instructional approaches, and to identify students who may benefit from additional academic support interventions.
Assist students in developing effective learning strategies, time management skills, and academic habits specific to mathematics.
Provide guidance regarding academic support resources and success strategies; refer students to additional academic support services as appropriate and communicate recurring student needs to faculty and supervisors.
Maintain regular, reliable availability aligned with course schedules and student support needs, including proactive outreach to students when appropriate.
Job Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or a closely related field.
Strong foundation in algebra and pre-calculus; demonstrated ability to support students through calculus-level material.
Experience supporting students in academic settings such as tutoring, coaching, supplemental instruction, or classroom support.
Ability to explain mathematical concepts clearly using multiple instructional approaches.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a student-centered, supportive approach.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a related discipline.
Experience working with developmental or transitional mathematics programs.
Familiarity with equity-minded or inclusive academic support practices.
Experience working in a community college or open-access higher education environment.

Source of Funding: Grant-funded; duration of employment is contingent on continued availability of funding
Salary: $36.55 per hour; part-time (up to 18 hours per week); non-benefited
