The Berkshire Community College Adult Learning Program (ALP) strives to educate and empower a diverse community of adult English Language Learners in Southern Berkshire County and beyond. We provide quality English language instruction, create a community of support, direct students to and teach them how to access resources, and work with students to identify career and education goals. By improving students' academic, language, and technology skills, we will increase their opportunities to enter college, obtain an industry-recognized credential, and expand their career choices.
Under the general supervision of the Director of the Berkshire Community College Adult ESOL Program, the ESOL Instructor provides in-person English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills instruction to adult, non-native English speakers. The instructor will develop dynamic, differentiated, and scaffolded lessons to help all students achieve their educational, career and personal goals. Additional responsibilities include lesson planning, curriculum development, staff meetings and professional development.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Prepare for and teach an adult ESOL class
Develop student centered lessons that align with the AEP Scope and Sequence and MA ELPS
Assign and correct asynchronous assignments that reinforce in-class instruction.
Submit necessary student attendance, goals, lesson plans, and any other information required in compliance with all deadlines
Assist with student advising, goal setting and supporting students in the achievement of educational and career goals.
Provide input and/or participate in program development activities.
Attend staff meetings and professional development training.
Perform special projects and related responsibilities as initiated and requested.
Job Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field with at least three years of ESOL teaching experience required, preferably with adults in an Adult Basic Education Program. Master's Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (or TESOL Certification) preferred.
Knowledge of the Massachusetts English Language Proficiency Standards (MA ELPS) preferred
Knowledge of adult immigrant learner populations, especially as regards to educational needs and barriers to persistence
Excellent organizational, communication, and technology skills
Familiarity with Google Drive, Google Classroom, and Zoom preferred
Ability to work inclusively, effectively, and flexibly with diverse faculty, staff and student population.
A team player who is passionate for collaboration, problem-solving and learning new things
A commitment to the advancement of immigrant populations
Must be willing to participate in curriculum development, professional development and attend staff/program meetings throughout the school year.
