Responsibilities
The Underwriter builds dynamic relationships, maintains a strong distribution channel, drives written premium growth, and maximizes renewal retention while delivering a high degree of customer satisfaction within our footprint of Independent Agencies. Key functions will include but are not limited to:
- Manage a territory of select independent agents. Berkley Mid-Atlantic Group strives to build strong, deep relationships with a limited number of agencies in each territory.
- Develop and maintain positive agency relationships.
- Cultivate new business opportunities through frequent personal meetings (proactive, planned, and documented sales calls) with agents and train assigned Agents on Blink usage.
- Analyze agency business not yet with BMAG, pipeline, and win desirable accounts.
- Stay abreast of competitor actions and pricing in assigned territory, make recommendations to ensure BMAG’s Small Commercial product offering continues to be relevant and differentiated in the market.
- Evaluate prospective profitability of potential business submissions in agents’ offices and make justifiable pre-qualification decisions.
- Train, and advocate for BMAG agency collaboration tools like our quote systems, agency portal and online endorsement capabilities
- Achieve new business written premium goals within BMAG’s appetite with appropriate documentation and handling of mid-term activities that may include, but are not limited to, endorsements, premium audit, reviewing loss control reports.
- Utilizes various underwriting tools to determine acceptable risk characteristics; determine accurate exposure classifications; set adequate property limits to accomplish appropriate insurance to value; and rate and quote business to agents.
Qualifications
- BA / BS degree, or equivalent combination of education and work experience, preferred.
- 3 years of experience in Insurance Underwriting, Sales, and Marketing.
- Experience in outside sales and demonstrated ability to manage multi-state marketing territory.
- Willingness to travel as required.
- Demonstrated ability to influence internal and external customers.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and build a book of business.
- Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of employees and management.
- Has the ability to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations and propose solutions.
- High energy self-starter, who is resilient and has an entrepreneurial spirit.
- Ability to sell and influence others.
- Goal-oriented achiever who delivers results.
- Basic knowledge of computer programs in a windows environment, including Word, Excel and Email is mandatory.
- Prior experience working with on-line underwriting tools is preferred (e.g., Silver Plume, and Reference Connect).
- Advanced professional insurance coursework (i.e., CPCU or AU) or completion of other insurance related classes is preferred.
