Responsibilities:
The DevOps Director plays a visible and influential leadership role to maintain and evolve our application development and infrastructure administration practices. They help lead the creation and support of development and internal CICD pipelines that limit human interaction with production systems, ensure code quality, and enable reproducibility across builds. They enable development teams to deploy services on-demand and ensure that proper screening and testing of the code takes place within the pipelines. They also enable platform teams to build infrastructure and deploy configurations without traditional administrative access. This role also has responsibility for code repositories and pipeline orchestration tools. This role will help establish technical standards and patterns, create tools and automated workflow capabilities, and help platform teams build and deploy on-prem and cloud ecosystems that foster a high degree of innovation and enablement.
This person will also be responsible for the day-to-day leadership and management of a DevOps Engineering team, including recruiting, training, mentoring, and performance management.
Technical Strategy
- Own and drive overall 1-2-year DevOps strategy, including technology investment and lifecycle goals.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders, including Enterprise Architecture, Infrastructure, Application Development, and Information Security teams to create and validate the strategy.
- Maintain contact with vendors, industry peers, and professional associations to keep informed of existing and emerging industry DevOps trends, standards, and technologies.
Leadership
- Provide day-to-day leadership and management of the Enterprise DevOps Engineering team and position it to become an internal resource, offering services and skills to support the development and execution of pipelines and other automation activities.
- Recruit and develop the skills and competencies of the Enterprise DevOps team; including building the technical and behavioral competencies needed to support our DevOps strategy; establish a robust DevOps training program.
- Builds and maintains strong relationships across the business and technical organizations across WRB.
- Be visible and inspire others to engage with and follow WRB’s DevOps and automation strategies.
Patterns and Standards Development
- Identify pattern and standard gaps for CICD pipeline development and/or automation opportunities and determine potential options to address.
- Facilitate the research and development of DevOps patterns and drive their adoption; ensure alignment to industry/tool best practices.
- Publish thorough documentation of CICD pipeline and automation standards/patterns and drive adoption across business and technical areas.
Operations and Support
- Troubleshoot incidents, identify root cause, and implement preventative measures for DevOps infrastructure, tools, and services.
- Own and drive the DevOps budget and vendor management.
- Help manage and maintain DevOps code, code repositories, environments, and processes in accordance with corporate, security, and compliance standards.
- Participate in prioritization and other DevOps work planning activities.
Community of Practice
- Contribute to the internal automation and architecture communities by participating in online forums, discussing standards and patterns, and documenting solutions designs which are shared across the community.
- Develop strong relationships with other business and technical teams and mentor less experienced developers and/or engineers in the development of their DevOps and automation skills.
- 8 years progressive engineering experience developing/engineering solutions and leading multiple large-scale engineering initiatives.
- 5 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership, and/or cross functional team leadership.
- 5 years of hands-on experience with DevOps/DevSecOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, code scanning, and infrastructure as code (IaC).
- 3 years of experience with IAM, certificate management, and secure parameters.
- 3 years hands-on experience with microservices, Docker, Kubernetes, and AKS.
- 3 years using Agile development methodologies.
- 2 years hands-on experience with Azure, AWS, GCP, or other commercially available public cloud environment.
- Extensive knowledge and application of DevOps practices in both cloud and on-premises environments.
- Extensive knowledge of both native and third-party code repository tools (GitHub, ADO, BitBucket, TFS), automated testing tools (Katalon, Selenium, etc.), and pipeline/automation tools (Terraform, GitHub Actions, Ansible, PowerShell, Python, etc.).
- Ability to quickly adapt and learn modern technologies and systems.
- Ability to balance the long-term (“big picture”) and short-term implications of individual decisions and organization goals.
- Travel Requirement: Up to 25%.
Preferred
- Experience in financial services or insurance industries.
