Berkeley Lab is hiring an Electronics Research Scientist/Engineer to lead R&D of advanced electronic instrumentation and data acquisition systems for particle accelerators and scientific applications. The role involves developing and upgrading digital Low-Level RF systems, FPGA-based real-time electronics, and software platforms, using innovative feedback techniques and advanced programming. This career position requires broad expertise, professional judgment, and independent decision-making.

What You Will Do

  • Works on complex problems requiring analysis and sound judgment in method selection. Collaborates with internal and external experts.
  • Independently develops advanced electronic instrumentation and data acquisition systems for particle accelerators.
  • Designs, programs, tests, and validates FPGA-based systems, including high-speed serial links and RF electronics.
  • Builds and maintains infrastructure for programming and testing scientific equipment.
  • Documents work, publishes results, and presents at conferences and workshops.
  • Collaborates across institutions to define requirements and deliver engineering solutions.
  • Contributes to high-impact projects such as LCLS-II, PIP-II, and AWA LLRF systems.
  • Assists in proposal development, including technical concepts, budgets, and schedules.
  • Follows EH&S policies and maintains required training.

Additional Responsibilities As Needed

  • Apply project management to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Lead and contribute to research advancing accelerator instrumentation.
  • Operate effectively in complex user facility environments.

What Is Required

  • Master’s in electrical engineering, physics, computer systems, or related field (PhD preferred).
  • 4 years of relevant experience beyond Master’s; 5 years in beam diagnostics/instrumentation preferred.
  • 3–5 years of leadership experience, mentoring engineers, and fostering collaboration.
  • Strong background in advanced electrical engineering principles, feedback/control theory, and complex problem-solving.
  • Experience with accelerator applications, especially storage ring lattice and orbit control.
  • Proficient in RTL design (Verilog/SystemVerilog/VHDL), IP integration, simulation, timing closure, and FPGA deployment.
  • Skilled in C/C , Python, or MATLAB/Octave; experience with high-speed serial links and FPGA transceivers.
  • Familiar with version control (Git), CI tools, and software quality practices.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and independent decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communicator with experience collaborating across disciplines and managing technical staff.

Desired Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge of accelerator control systems, especially EPICS.
  • Familiarity with synchrotron light science (e.g., ALS) preferred.
  • Experienced in RF technology, magnetics, distributed controls, and algorithm design.
  • Strong academic background; contributed to publications.
  • Skilled in presenting scientific work at conferences and seminars.

Notes

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • The expected salary for this position is between $147,000.00 - $206,000.00 annually and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $110,592.00 - $265,409.00 annually depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • This position is subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. A REAL ID or other acceptable form of identification is required to access Berkeley Lab sites.
