RESIDENTIAL BUILDING INSPECTOR

DEPARTMENT : Berkeley County Engineering & Building Inspections

REPORTS TO : Director of Community Development

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Responsible for inspections on permitted structures to include: concrete, engineered lumber, general framing, mechanical, plumbing, etc.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

• Inspect all phases of residential building, plumbing and mechanical construction from footers to final inspection.
• Investigate complaints of building code violations or non-compliance with local ordinances.
• Prepare and serve notice of violation letters.
• Attend and/or testify at court for cases where compliance was not met.
• Answer building code and other general questions while in the office and/or in the field.
• Document results of inspections into the computer.
• Assist in the interpretation of codes.
• Meet with architects, building owners and contractors concerning issues raised during field inspections.
• Attend training and seminars.
• Performs related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

• High school diploma or GED certificate.
• Advanced technical school training or equivalent in plumbing, mechanical, and general construction.
• Considerable knowledge of ICC building codes and all phases of construction
• Ability to read and interpret building plans.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Possess basic computer skills.
• Extensive mobility required for standing, walking (over uneven terrain), climbing (ladders, stairways, etc), bending, kneeling, crawling (under floors or crawl spaces). Ability to complete building inspections.
• Ability to obtain Residential Building Inspector Certification, Plumbing Inspector Certification, and Mechanical Inspector Certification within two (2) years according to WV State Fire Marshall requirements.

**Comparable training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications**
