When a member of our faculty needs to be away, we rely on a skilled and consistent substitute to ensure continuity for our students. Bergman Academy is seeking an engaging, reliable, and mission-driven music educator to serve as a regular substitute teacher.
In this role, you will serve as the primary substitute for our music program, leading classes when our music teacher is absent. When music coverage is not needed, you will provide support and classroom coverage across the building- we’ll keep you busy. Our students range from three years old through eighth grade, offering the opportunity to build relationships across divisions and contribute meaningfully to the life of the school.
The ideal candidate holds an Iowa Teaching License or Iowa Substitute Authorization, brings a strong understanding of music education, has prior classroom or substitute teaching experience, and is confident leading a classroom while maintaining a positive, engaging learning environment.

Music Experience
Candidates with a background in music education are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience in elementary general music and choral instruction is especially valuable. Familiarity with approaches such as Orff and/or Kodály is a plus, along with a passion for helping students explore and appreciate music across cultures, styles, and time periods.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary substitute for music classes (K–8), following lesson plans and maintaining continuity of instruction
- Provide classroom coverage across grade levels (PK–8) when music coverage is not needed
- Implement teacher plans while upholding classroom expectations and school curriculum
- Maintain a positive, structured classroom environment that supports student engagement and learning
- Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and families, as appropriate
- Demonstrate flexibility and professionalism in a dynamic, day-to-day schedule
- Support the broader school community through duties such as lunch/recess supervision and carline
- Follow all school policies, procedures, and safety protocols
The Ideal Candidate will:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree (education and/or music preferred); Iowa Teaching License or Substitute Authorization required
- Bring classroom or substitute teaching experience, with confidence leading groups of students
- Demonstrate strong classroom management and the ability to adapt quickly across age groups and subjects
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues and contribute to a positive team environment
- Foster a classroom culture where students feel safe to take risks, make mistakes, and stay curious
- Communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing
- Find joy in working with students of all ages and building relationships across the school community
