Job Description

Introduction

The Beresford Vet Clinic is family-oriented veterinary clinic that provides personal service to the agricultural, urban and rescue communities around Beresford, SD. We are looking for a full-time Veterinary Assistant to be an invaluable member of our clinic team! This position will assist the Veterinarians with providing outstanding care to a mix of animals – companion, ruminants, equine, exotics and all those in between. The clinic goal is to develop a lasting relationship with our clients and patients through positive interaction, community service, quality veterinary medicine and teamwork.

Job Responsibilities

The Veterinary Technician assists the veterinarians and veterinary technician during dental cleanings, physical examinations, surgeries and immunizations as well as customer education and inventory management.

1. Follows the Beresford Vet Clinic philosophy that everyone works together to provide the highest possible quality of services to the customers.

2. Responsible for the Regular and consistent attendance.

3. Observes patients throughout the day for signs of illness, parasites and disease control, assessment of change in patient status. Reports any abnormalities or concerns to the veterinarian in charge or veterinary technician.

4. Correctly administers medications under the direction of a veterinarian.

5. Assists with nail trimming, ear cleaning, expressing anal glands, and bathing procedures.

6. Prepares patients for surgery, assists when needed.

7. Assists with the operation of the anesthesia machine and other applicable equipment.

8. Assists in radiology.

9. Prepares surgery packs.

10. Cleans and autoclaves syringes, needles and other surgical instruments. Thoroughly cleans autoclave per clinic schedule.

11. Assists the Veterinarians or Veterinary Technician during dental cleanings, physical examinations, surgeries, immunizations and euthanasia. Also performs dental cleanings.

12. Performs laboratory tests on blood, urine and feces, such as urinalysis and blood counts, to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of animal health problems.

13. Understands proper medical record keeping, how to invoice, and how to record notes in patient files.

14. Unpacks deliveries, reconciles against packing slip, and restocks supplies.

15. Alerts veterinary technician of special-order medications arrival so customer may be contacted or contacts customers directly.

16. Restocks shelves and drawers in exam rooms and vet truck with necessary supplies.

17. Assists with maintaining proper levels of drugs, medical supplies, cleaning, and office supplies.

18. Cleans exams rooms after each visit and prepares for the next customer and patient. Ensures supplies are always available and adequately stocked in exam rooms and in the vet truck.

19. Adheres to all clinic policies and procedures.

20. Maintains a neat, clean and safe work environment.

21. Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. 1-year previous experience as a Veterinary Assistant or working in a veterinary practice preferred. Must have a valid driver’s license.

· Must feel and express a genuine liking for animals and their owners and for working in the animal care field.

· Works independently on assigned tasks as well as accepts direction on given assignments.

· Understands logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

· Exhibits strong problem solving and an organized approach to the position.

· Ability to remain calm in the face of various types of stressful situations, not allowing emotions to overwhelm attitude and/or performance

· Ability to foster a positive work environment for colleagues and customers.

· Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Understands and carries out oral and written direction.

· Must have telephone and computer skills, i.e. email, clinic computer program, Microsoft Word. (Training available)

· Must be a team player willing to learn new techniques and treatments, offer creative ideas and accept change.

· Knowledge of the instruments, materials, and standardized procedures used in the full variety of treatments to prepare and provide “tableside” assistance, preferred.
