What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Treasurer position at Benzie County?
Under the supervision of the County Treasurer and/or the Chief Deputy Treasurer performs duties associated with the collection and management of county funds. Also, participates in the collection, accounting, and bookkeeping of county revenues and performs accounting tasks, prepares reports, reconciles accounts, prepares tax bills, deposits funds, and assists the public. Further assists department staff as assigned.
- Assist the public with their accounts, answering questions concerning their accounts. providing information about requirements and fees and providing general information.
- Maintain orderly files and organization in the treasurer's vaults and maintain supplies.
- Process delinquent tax payments.
- Process refunds, tax certifications, forfeitures, redemptions, foreclosures, and tax searches.
- Process title company requests for tax information and certifications. Monthly invoice Title Companies and other charges for tax histories, certification, and searches.
- Prepare delinquent tax notices for mailing.
- Process the sale of in-office dog licenses, prepare dog licenses for Veterinarians, input dog license data, and mail dog license renewal notices.
- Balance end-of-the-day cash receipts, delinquent tax receipts, and dog licenses, prepare bank deposits, and file Treasurer's copies of deposit slips.
- Assist auditors in annual audit preparation.
- Oversees the collection of delinquent personal property taxes in the possession of the County Treasurer. Process and file court proceedings.
- Processes all escheats to the State of Michigan.
- All other duties as assigned by the County Treasurer and Chief Deputy.
Education, Training, and Experience:
- Educational requirements include a High School diploma or GED is required.
- One to two years of non-supervisory experience.
- Proficient skills using Microsoft Office programs including but not limited to Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.
- Knowledge of property tax laws, banking procedures, and related accounting.
Licensing and Other Requirements:
- Must have a valid Driver's License and personal vehicle insurance.
