JOB TITLE: Coordinator of Student Support Services

SUPERVISOR: Superintendent

LOCATION: Central Administration

JOB SUMMARY: The Coordinator of Student Support Service serves as the academic, discipline, and culture & climate administrator for students throughout the district. The goal of this position will be to create and maintain a positive learning environment and culture of high expectations in all district schools. The Coordinator will oversee interventions that will lead to improved instructional time, discipline, and family involvement. The Coordinator will oversee the development of a system for school staff to implement strategies and programs designed to improve culture and climate and regularly monitor school culture and climate. The Coordinator of Student Support Services will oversee the successful implementation of the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support or MTSS Framework for the district and serve as the designated district administrator. The Coordinator will work with all stakeholders to effectively engage staff, students, parents, and families in the fundamental principles of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. Additionally, this position must have strong management, written, and verbal skills, and the ability to motivate and inspire all stakeholders toward the common goal of safe and orderly school operations. Finally, the Coordinator of Student Support Service will take the lead on all McKinney-Vento Services, alternative and distance learning as it relates to students’ wellness and well-being.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree

Minimum of Five (5) years of experience in teaching or related field

Current and valid Michigan Administrative Credential or eligible for

Strong communication skills.

Proven ability to meet the challenges of an urban school district

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s or Doctorate in Education or Behavioral Sciences
  • Teacher Certification

Job Functions And Responsibilities

  • Oversee the development and implementation of planning, monitoring, and maintaining school-wide Tier 1 interventions aligned to the structures and systems in place to promote a positive school culture.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of alternative and distance learning as it pertains to student wellness and well-being.
  • Manage personnel who oversee staff implementation of Tier 2 and 3 behavioral interventions as directed by school leaders.
  • Oversees and participants in the hearing process for student discipline and transfer appeals
  • Develops alternative programs
  • Develop, implement, and monitor tools to ensure communication is meaningful and effective
  • Develop and design processes and procedures that ensure suspended students are provided with additional academic support during missed instruction time to ensure that they remain academically on track
  • Develop and design processes and protocols for maintaining, monitoring, and enforcing student commitment contracts with each student before his/her return to school or in-class instruction
  • Assist in tracking and decreasing out-of-school suspension rates for the district
  • Develop and implement communication protocols that ensure students and families have access to information about their rights and responsibilities and inquiries are sent to the appropriate channels.
  • Respond to inquiries from a variety of stakeholders (Board of Education, contractors, staff, administrators, etc.)
  • Guide school culture and climate initiatives and district-wide restorative justice initiatives.
  • Provide information and reports on student discipline.
  • Oversee district Youth Advocates, Security Ambassadors, and their annual training.
  • Manage and maintain the system-wide Energy Management System (EMS).
  • Attends school board meetings and prepares such reports as directed by the Superintendent
  • Maintain the Student Code of Conduct manual.
  • Maintains confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information.
  • Set expectations and monitor all school administrators' and teachers' efforts in consistently maintaining school-wide expectations, systems, and structures for promoting a positive climate & culture within the school building
  • Establish and monitor processes that foster a safe and supportive academic and social environment that supports and fosters student growth and achievement
  • Hold one-on-one conferences with students and parents whose repeated infractions have not been deterred and determine next steps
  • Design and develop processes and protocols for a behavior contract system to support and monitor the progress of students who are frequently suspended
  • Develop the District's re-entry protocol for students returning to school from out-of-school suspension or incarceration
  • Support the school in facilitating the delivery of services for students who have experienced loss or trauma Coordinate with school administrators to ensure schools’ efforts to significantly reduce the number of incidents that lead to missed instruction and/or out-of-school suspension, in alignment with BHAS’s goals and priorities
  • Communicate effectively with deans, coordinators, officers, specialists, supervisors, interventionists, and advocates to ensure adherence to the District's Student Code of Conduct
  • Aggregate and disaggregate behavioral data in the student information system and provide regular updates to the Superintendent’s Cabinet
  • Provide district-wide guidelines to implement school-wide positive behavior incentives to reduce the number of students who commit behavioral infractions
  • Consistently and continuously monitor discipline data
  • Assist in the development and refinement of the Student Study team
  • Monitors and provides regular monthly reporting data related to measuring the effectiveness of attendance and discipline
  • Coordinates data around Attendance and Chronic Absenteeism
  • Conduct relevant Distributive Leadership Team meetings
  • Develop strategies and provide support for schools around ways to increase attendance and decrease out-of-school incidents
  • Perform other tasks, duties, or services consistent with this position as assigned by the Superintendent or designee

Must be able to be bonded in the State of Michigan

Terms Of Employment

Salary based on education and experience pursuant to the Benton Harbor Area School Board policies and collective bargaining agreement for any position that falls under collective bargaining.

The performance of this job will be evaluated by the Superintendent.
