School Social Worker – Benton Harbor Area Schools (BHAS)
Position Overview
Benton Harbor Area Schools (BHAS) is committed to preparing every student for success academically, socially, emotionally, and personally. As part of “Tiger Nation,” the School Social Worker plays a vital role in creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that promotes student achievement and well-being.
The School Social Worker provides direct and consultative services to secondary students, families, and school staff by addressing social, emotional, behavioral, and environmental factors that impact learning and school success. This position involves delivering individual, group, and classroom-based interventions; supporting students with disabilities and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs); collaborating with educators and community agencies; and connecting students and families with critical resources and support services.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct psychosocial assessments and identify students’ social, emotional, and behavioral needs.
- Develop and implement individualized intervention, treatment, and support plans.
- Provide therapeutic and counseling services to students individually, in groups, and within classroom settings.
- Support students with IEPs through direct services, consultation, and progress monitoring.
- Conduct Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) and develop Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
- Address concerns related to attendance, bullying, peer conflict, substance use, gang involvement, school safety, mental health, social adjustment, and crisis situations.
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, families, and community partners to support student success and improve school performance.
- Assist students and families experiencing challenges such as homelessness, abuse, violence, hunger, poverty, or other barriers to education by connecting them with community resources.
- Maintain communication and partnerships with external agencies, including mental health providers, shelters, food banks, medical providers, juvenile justice partners, and community organizations.
- Facilitate student support groups focused on conflict resolution, coping skills, decision-making, and healthy peer relationships.
- Serve as a member of the school’s crisis response team and provide emergency intervention when needed.
- Maintain accurate case records, reports, documentation, and student files while adhering to confidentiality requirements.
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from a Michigan Department of Education-approved program, including a supervised practicum experience.
- Valid Michigan School Social Work certification or eligibility for certification.
- Appropriate state licensure and certification to practice social work.
- Experience working in school settings preferred.
- Knowledge of adolescent development, trauma-informed practices, crisis intervention, special education processes, and family systems.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and documentation skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, educators, and community agencies.

Work Environment and Employment Information
This is a full-time, on-site position located in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Salary is based on education, experience, district policies, and applicable collective bargaining agreements. Employment may be contingent upon funding availability if supported by grant or Title funding sources.
