Overview
The Aerial Lineman is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of fiber optic telecommunications infrastructure on utility poles and aerial strand. This role involves working at heights, operating equipment, reading construction plans, and completing safe, high-quality work in various field environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, and repair aerial fiber optic cable, strand, lashing, and associated hardware.
- Perform aerial construction tasks including pole transfers, make-ready work, building strand, placing and tensioning cables, bonding/grounding, and overlash activities.
- Use hand and power tools such as lashers, strand levelers, chain hoists, fiber reels, and climbing gear.
- Operate bucket trucks, reel trailers, digger derricks, and other aerial construction equipment safely and efficiently.
- Read and interpret engineering prints, splice diagrams, maps, and job specifications.
- Ensure all work meets industry standards, customer requirements, and applicable utility regulations.
- Perform pole climbing using hooks and belts or work from an aerial lift as required.
- Maintain a safe work environment by following OSHA, industry, and company safety protocols.
- Complete daily paperwork including production reports, vehicle inspections, and safety forms.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, ground hands, and splicers to coordinate job tasks.
- Identify potential hazards, perform job site risk assessments, and report issues promptly.
Qualifications
- Valid Class A CDL (required for operating and transporting equipment/trailers).
- Prior experience in aerial telecom or utility line construction.
- Ability to climb utility poles safely using approved climbing equipment.
- Strong knowledge of aerial strand, lashing, hardware installation, and fiber construction methods.
- Able to work at heights of 40 feet and lift 50–75 lbs.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Clean driving record; must pass background check and drug screening.
- Willingness to travel and stay overnight in company-paid hotels when job sites are more than one hour from home.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with AT&T, Verizon, Charter, Frontier, or similar telecom specifications.
- Bucket truck, digger derrick and/or heavy-equipment operating experience.
- OSHA 10/30, First Aid, or CPR certification.
