POSITION SUMMARY
The Cardiac Monitor Technician is responsible for surveillance, recording, reporting, interpretation and troubleshooting technical aspects of electrocardiographic monitors. The Cardiac Monitor Technician functions under the direction of the Registered nurse (RN) as part of the integrated healthcare team and is responsible for administering safe and effective care to patients of Benson Hospital.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Continuously monitors cardiac rhythms, notifying patient's primary nurse and/or charge nurse of any changes in rate or rhythm.
Measures, evaluates, and documents rhythm strips at a minimum hourly on all emergency room patients including admission and discharge or transfer strips. Medical inpatients with telemetry monitoring ordered will have cardiac rhythm strips every 4 hours and PRN, including admission & discharge strips.
Maintains inventory log on all telemetry units and patients use of same.
Assists in ordering supplies such as tracing paper, lead wires, and batteries as needed.
Troubleshoots technical monitor problems.
Attends 75% of yearly staff meetings; remains accountable for content of missed staff meetings. Attends all mandatory in-services as required.
Demonstrates flexibility in scheduling in order to provide continuous support to monitoring patients.
Works in various clinical departments where qualified and competent, depending on the needs of the hospital.
Additional responsibilities are that of receptionist and secretarial duties (to include answering phones and communicating with other internal and external customers.
Taking and recording patient vitals hourly and as requested by patient's primary nurse.
Assists patients with ambulation, toileting, and other patient care needs as they arise and as directed by the RN.
Clean patient rooms as needed and directed by patient's primary nurse.
Perform duties as required within the scope of the nursing department and within approved licensure and certification
Adheres to all Infection Control policies and practices, including hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, isolation precautions, and healthcare worker immunizations.
Reduces the risks of accidental injury or exposure by following established safety guidelines and policies and procedures.
Maintains patient confidentiality and does not discuss patient in public areas such as cafeteria, hallways, parking lots or loudly so others can hear.
Works every other weekend as dictated by patient acuity/census and staffing needs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
High School diploma or GED
Successful completion of cardiac dysrhythmia recognition & interpretation course
Current CNA, EMT or Paramedic Certification
Current AHA BLS
1 year as monitor tech in coronary care or telemetry unit – Preferred.
Maintain current certification in non-violent crisis intervention, CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) Certification or ability to complete.
CPR per the Benson Hospital Policy.
