CNA / Caregiver – Behavioral Health Experience
Position Summary A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) / Caregiver with behavioral‑health experience provides direct care, emotional support, and behavior‑management assistance to clients with conditions such as autism, developmental disabilities, dementia, traumatic brain injury, or mental‑health disorders. The role focuses on safety, dignity, and consistent behavioral support while helping clients maintain independence in daily living.
Key Responsibilities
Personal Care Support — Assist with bathing, grooming, toileting, dressing, mobility, and hygiene while maintaining client dignity.
Behavioral Management — Implement behavior plans, use de‑escalation techniques, reinforce positive behaviors, and document behavioral incidents.
ADL Assistance — Support daily living tasks such as meal prep, feeding, housekeeping, and medication reminders.
Safety Monitoring — Maintain a safe environment, prevent elopement, follow crisis‑prevention protocols, and monitor for self‑harm or aggression.
Communication & Reporting — Document care activities, behavioral changes, and incidents; communicate with nurses, supervisors, and family members.
Emotional Support — Build trust, encourage social engagement, and support clients through emotional or behavioral challenges.
Skill‑Building Support — Assist clients in developing independence, coping skills, and daily routines.
Required Qualifications
Active CNA Certification (state‑approved) or equivalent caregiver experience
Experience working with behavioral‑health or special‑needs clients
Knowledge of CPI, PCM, or other crisis‑intervention techniques
Ability to lift 25–50 lbs and assist with mobility
Strong communication, patience, and problem‑solving skills
Preferred Qualifications
CPR/First Aid Certification
Experience with autism spectrum behaviors, dementia, or psychiatric conditions
Training in trauma‑informed care
Familiarity with behavior support plans (BSPs)
Work Environment
In‑home care, group homes, assisted living, or behavioral‑health facilities
May involve clients with aggression, self‑injury, wandering, or high‑anxiety behaviors
Requires calm, consistent, and compassionate support
