Job Overview
Responsible for the care of dogs and cats who are found, abandoned, abused, neglected, orphaned, or released of ownership. Must have some knowledge of animal care, assist with cleaning, sanitation, and upkeep of the facility. Hands on help with admission, medical care, feeding, documenting animal medical records, inventories of shelter medications, food, and supplies. Understand nutritional needs, animal health, animal stress, and first aid skills. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with staff and the public, have phone skills, have the ability to work in a "Team" setting and also alone, observe and report health, physical condition, and temperament of incoming animals. Have the ability to work with our dogs, teach them basic obedience and take them out of the shelter for the day. Ability to lift 50 lbs, reach, bend, and stand. Our goal is to prepare each pet to be in the best of emotional and physical wellness for their new home.
Responsibilities
- Provide daily care and monitoring of animals, including feeding, cleaning, and exercise routines
- Assist with animal restraint during examinations and procedures, when needed, to ensure safety for animals and staff
- Administer medications and treatments accurately following instructions
- Maintain detailed records of animal health, treatments, and behaviors in accordance with shelter protocols
- Handle various species including dogs and cats, with professionalism and compassion
- Support front desk duties such as client communication, appointment scheduling, and pet check-in/out as needed
- Ensure the cleanliness of kennels, treatment areas, and equipment to uphold hygiene standards
- Participate in ongoing training related to dog training, veterinary terminology, animal anatomy, and critical care procedures
Skills
- Kennel experience or background in animal care preferred
- Knowledge of veterinary terminology, pet care, and animal physiology
- Experience with animal restraint techniques and medication administration
- Ability to handle various animals including dogs and cats, with confidence and care
- Veterinary technician or assistant experience is highly desirable
- Excellent communication skills for effective team collaboration and client interaction
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail
