Job Summary
The Medical Exercise Specialist provides safe, evidence-based exercise programming for clients with medical conditions, orthopedic limitations, or post-rehabilitation needs. The role bridges the gap between healthcare and fitness by delivering functional movement training, monitoring client progress, and collaborating with healthcare providers to support long-term health, independence, and quality of life.
This position is particularly focused on adults aged 55 and individuals managing chronic conditions, mobility limitations, or recovery following physical therapy or clinical treatment.
Key Responsibilities
Client Assessment & Program Design
- Conduct intake screenings and functional movement assessments
- Review relevant medical history, contraindications, and provider recommendations
- Develop individualized exercise programs that prioritize safety, mobility, and stability
- Modify programs based on pain, fatigue, tolerance, or medical status
Exercise Instruction & Session Delivery
- Guide clients through corrective, strength, balance, posture, and cardiovascular exercises
- Emphasize proper biomechanics and joint protection
- Provide cueing, education, and supportive coaching
- Monitor vital responses, perceived exertion, and tolerance during sessions
Collaboration & Communication
- Communicate progress updates (with client consent) to:
- Physical therapists
- Physicians
- Chiropractors
- Other allied health professionals
- Support continuity of care between rehabilitation and independent exercise
Documentation & Safety
- Maintain accurate session notes and progress records
- Track outcomes such as strength, endurance, gait, and functional mobility
- Follow emergency and risk-management protocols
- Uphold HIPAA and client confidentiality guidelines
Client Education
- Teach lifestyle movement strategies for daily living and fall-prevention
- Promote self-efficacy and adherence to home exercise plans
- Encourage safe physical activity outside of training sessions
Qualifications
Required
- Certification as a CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER (or equivalent), such as:
- CPR/AED Certification
- Strong knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics, and chronic condition management
- Experience working with older adults or medically complex clients
Preferred
- Medical Exercise Training Institute (METI) certification
- ACE Medical Exercise Specialist designation
- ACSM Exercise Physiologist or Clinical Exercise Specialist designation
- Degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Gerontology, or related field
- Experience collaborating with healthcare professionals
- Background in senior fitness, adaptive fitness, or post-rehab exercise
