Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Small Machine Department Supervisor to lead our team in the precision machining of industrial components. This role combines technical expertise in conventional machining (mills, lathes, and VTLs) with leadership responsibilities to oversee daily operations, mentor machinists, and ensure quality and production targets are consistently met.
This position is ideal for a skilled machinist with a strong background in manual and CNC machining who is ready to step into (or continue in) a supervisory role in a dynamic, high-mix, job-shop environment serving industries like aerospace, paper, food processing, and heavy equipment repair.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise and support day-to-day operations of the small machine department, ensuring efficient workflow and job completion
- Operate and oversee use of conventional mills, lathes, and vertical turret lathes (VTLs) to machine and repair precision components
- Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, GD&T, and technical specifications
- Assign work, set up machines, and support team members with troubleshooting and best practices
- Inspect in-process and finished parts using micrometers, calipers, indicators, and other precision tools
- Provide hands-on training and mentorship to junior machinists and new hires
- Monitor production schedules and coordinate with other departments to meet deadlines
- Ensure adherence to safety standards, quality protocols, and maintenance schedules
- Assist with hiring, performance evaluations, and technical development of department personnel
- Recommend and implement process improvements to enhance productivity and quality
Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED required; technical certificate, trade school training, or apprenticeship preferred
- Minimum 5 years of experience operating manual/conventional equipment (mills, lathes, VTLs), with CNC experience a plus
- Prior supervisory or lead machinist experience strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of machining practices, inspection methods, and machine maintenance
- Ability to read and interpret complex drawings and GD&T
- Skilled in machining large or irregularly shaped parts with close tolerances
- Excellent communication and leadership skills with a collaborative mindset
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, job-shop environment with shifting priorities
- Proficient in safety practices related to machining and material handling (e.g., crane operation, lockout/tagout)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience supervising a small team of machinists or technicians
- Background in machining for industrial equipment, aerospace, or rotating components
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement practices (5S, root cause analysis)
- Experience balancing repair and new part manufacturing work
- Ability to plan and prioritize multiple jobs across machines and shifts
