This role requires strong technical understanding of large industrial components, precision machining processes, high-tolerance repair methods, and engineered refurbishment practices. The Estimator / Planner ensures that customer requirements are fully captured, risks are identified, and work is planned with an emphasis on safety, quality, and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Estimating – Technical & Commercial

  • Analyze customer RFQs, drawings, reverse-engineered geometry, worn components, and inspection findings.

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for machining, welding, metal spray, disassembly, cleaning, NDT, balancing, and engineered repair processes.

  • Estimate repair strategies for rotating equipment such as:

  • Pump shafts, sleeves, impellers

  • Turbine rotors and casings

  • Compressor components

  • Gearbox housings and gears

  • Large rollers, cylinders, and bearing journals

  • Calculate machining tolerances, fits, runouts, and GD&T requirements.

  • Determine tooling, fixturing, materials, subcontracted operations, and labor resources.

  • Build customer-facing quotations aligned with profitability targets.

  • Update and maintain historical cost databases for accuracy and continuous refinement.

Job Planning – Workflow & Execution

  • Convert estimates into detailed, step-by-step job routings.

  • Define process sequences for disassembly, inspection, machining, welding, heat treatment, balancing, assembly, and testing.

  • Draft or support creation of detailed repair procedures and machining plans.

  • Coordinate scheduling and capacity planning with Operations.

  • Identify and procure required tooling, fixtures, measuring instruments, and raw materials.

  • Ensure all quality, safety, and engineering requirements are properly integrated into job plans.

  • Monitor work progress and update plans as scope evolves or condition assessments change.

Technical Project Coordination

  • Support Engineering in developing reverse-engineering models, repair strategies, and tolerance stack-ups.

  • Provide direct technical communication with customers regarding scope, timelines, and change orders.

  • Conduct pre-job and post-job reviews to analyze estimate vs. actual variances.

  • Support root cause analysis, equipment failure investigations, and engineered upgrades.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives in estimating, process planning, and workflow optimization.

Qualifications

Required Technical Skills

  • Working knowledge of rotating equipment components, mechanical fits, and precision alignment.

  • Familiarity with NDT methods (MT, PT, UT) and how results impact repair scope.

  • Proficiency with ERP/MRP job costing systems.

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience in power generation, oil & gas, or industrial equipment repair facilities.

  • Background as a machinist, repair technician, or manufacturing engineer.

  • CAD/CAM knowledge for interpreting and creating models or machining strategies.

  • Understanding of metallurgy, heat treatment processes, failure modes, and material selection.

  • Ability to perform basic geometry/trigonometry for machining calculations.

Soft Skills

  • Excellent communication skills across technical and non-technical teams.
