JOB DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, the Transportation Repair Technician inspects equipment for repairs and deficiencies, diagnoses malfunctions to determine cause, and adjusts, repairs, replaces, or modifies automotive equipment, parts and auxiliary systems. A position in this class may be delegated the additional responsibility for performing lead worker duties in the absence of the lead person. The Transportation Repair Technician is primarily responsible for diagnosing malfunctions, performing journey level repairs on gasoline and diesel equipment, including engine and transmission overhauls, and road testing equipment to ensure safe operating conditions. Additional responsibilities include inspecting buses to note deficiencies as required by State law, putting on and taking off tire chains, performing preventative maintenance duties, and repairing seats. After completion of an initial orientation period, work is performed without direct supervision. Repair procedures are detailed in automotive and stationary equipment manuals and specifications prepared by the District or by equipment manufacturers. Assignments are to be received from a lead worker or supervisor in the form of verbal or written instructions. The Transportation Repair Technician works under the supervision of the Transportation Fleet Manager. The employee is required to hold a valid Oregon Class B Commercial Driver's License and a School Bus Driver's Certificate. The employee may be required to drive a bus route or shuttle as needed.
NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK:
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Conducts inspections of equipment in the field or in the shop to determine safety status or to identify potential causes of equipment malfunction.
- Conducts visual inspections of equipment in the shop to identify items not on the complaint list which may need repair or replacement and determines items needing immediate attention.
- Performs diagnostic inspections on automotive or other motorized or stationary equipment to identify electrical, mechanical, or other equipment problems.
- Drives, and operates vehicle, or uses diagnostic test equipment to identify problems and malfunctions.
- Must have basic computer skills to retrieve vehicle information as needed.
- May be required to initiate an order for parts using parts books and other sources, including contacting vendors to determine availability of parts.
- Performs major repairs in the shop and minor repairs in the field on a variety of gasoline or diesel powered equipment such as school buses, dump trucks, flatbed trucks, vans, cars.
- Operates engine analyzer and tune-up equipment, and other electrical, electronic, or mechanical testing or equipment repair tools.
- Repairs or replaces equipment components such as engines, automatic and manual transmissions, power trains, differentials, and axles including gears, and fuel injector systems, electrical or electronic ignition and electrical generation and transmission systems, air compression systems and lines, engine cooling and air conditioning systems, suspension systems, mechanical breaking systems, and air and hydraulic braking systems; cleans tools and equipment; keeps work area clean and orderly.
- Applies safety procedures to all facets of work.
- Maintains records of work performed by recording nature of repair, labor hours, costs and parts used in making repairs (i.e., work order).
- Drives equipment in and out of repair shop.
- Operates and road tests repaired vehicles to ensure proper operation.
- Inspects buses to note deficiencies as required by State law.
- Puts on and takes off tire chains.
- Repairs seats.
- Performs preventative maintenance on vehicles.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Fulfills performance standards identified in the evaluation process as required by the position.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in heated and unheated areas and which may include working outdoors during inclement weather. Work also involves exposure to exhaust fumes and chemicals such as gasoline, oil and antifreeze. The employee is responsible for knowing and applying safety precautions when in the work area, when working with equipment, and in lifting and carrying tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds (see end of report). Significant physical abilities including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, reaching, handling, hearing conversations and other sounds (i.e.air leaks), near / far visual acuity / depth perception. Repair work in the field may require exposure to adverse weather conditions. Employees in this department are required to seek assistance of another if lifting or maneuvering more than 50 pounds.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge:
- Standard trade practices, automotive tools, and diagnostic equipment.
- Construction and operation of automotive electrical systems.
- Principles of construction and operation of internal combustion engines.
- Methods and tools used in the repair of gasoline and diesel automotive and allied equipment including engines, transmissions power trains, fuel and ignition systems, air and mechanical brakes, and suspension systems.
- Safety hazards and necessary precautions required to work around, in and under vehicles or to work with petroleum-based chemical, solvents and exhaust fumes.
Skills and Abilities:
Possess the physical ability to regularly attend work and fulfill the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Skillfully use tools and operate diagnostic and power equipment employed in the repair and adjustment of engines and components.
- Locate and repair defects in motor equipment.
- Weld lightweight and heavyweight metal using gas and electric welders as required.
- Follow oral and written directions.
- Accurately diagnose equipment malfunctions using mechanical, electrical, and electronic testing equipment.
- Repair automotive equipment and auxiliary electrical, electronic, mechanical, or structural components.
- Perform diagnostic or mechanical repair work independently at the journey level without direct supervision in the shop or in the field.
- Read, understand, interpret and apply instructions and procedures in repair manuals to work performed.
- Learn State repair and maintenance requirements for school buses.
- Use welding and other shop equipment such as lathes and grinders.
- Work safely around noisy machinery, gasoline and other petroleum products, exhaust and welding fumes, and work in heated and unheated areas.
- Light repair of equipment in the field requiring exposure to adverse weather conditions.
- Maintain a safe driving record.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisor, and vehicle operators.
- Learn and participate in the work of co-workers as required in the position.
- Maintain a high level of commitment to completion of all tasks.
- Possess the appropriate Oregon Driver's License and maintain an insurable status for automobile and liability coverage.
- Adhere to the district requirements for a drug-free workplace.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Must have a high school diploma, or equivalent. Must be able to meet industry journeyman standards for repair and diagnosis within two years after date of employment. Must provide a set of standard technician’s tools.
The position requires working knowledge of several technical procedures or work activity areas and ability to train others in such activity. In-depth knowledge of work-related School District policies and practices in necessary. Proficiency can be acquired in twelve to twenty-four months.
Must obtain an ODE School Bus Inspection certification.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSING:
- The employee is required to hold a valid Oregon Class B Commercial Driver's License issued by the Oregon State Department of Motor Vehicles and a School Bus Driver's Certificate. Obtain an ODE School Bus Inspection Certificate.
JOBS REQUIRING LIFT/ MANEUVER OF UP TO BUT NOT EXCEEDING 50 LBS:
- Employees working in the transportation shop performing vehicle repair duties are provided a variety of equipment to assist in the lifting and maneuvering of parts and materials. Items exceeding 50 pounds in weight should be lifted or moved utilizing a team lift arrangement or tools provided specifically to move the equipment. Examples include hydraulic lifts, wheeled carts, and tire and break drum dollies.
