Position Summary
The Belmont County Heritage Museum is seeking a knowledgeable, organized, and community-minded Museum Curator to oversee daily operations and help preserve and share Belmont County’s history. This role is responsible for staffing the museum during public hours, maintaining exhibits and collections, assisting visitors, and serving as the primary liaison with other museums and historical partners across the county.
The ideal candidate will have an interest in local history, be detail-oriented, have strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage both public-facing and behind-the-scenes responsibilities.
Schedule
Thursday–Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. With evening hours flexibility for special events or programs, as needed. The museum is open seasonally April through November.
Key Responsibilities
Museum Operations & Visitor Services
- Staff the museum during open hours (Thursday–Saturday)
- Welcome visitors, give tours, answer questions, and provide an engaging and informative experience about Belmont County history and the exhibits
- Open and close the museum, ensuring a safe environment
Collections & Exhibit Care
- Assist with archiving and cataloging artifacts, documents, and photographs
- Help maintain and rotate exhibits as needed
- Monitor the condition of displays and report preservation needs
- Support basic exhibit setup and upkeep
Cleaning & Facility Upkeep
- Perform light cleaning to maintain a neat and professional appearance, including:
- Dusting display areas
- Vacuuming/sweeping floors
- Tidying visitor and workspaces
- Help ensure the museum remains organized and presentable for visitors
Partnerships & Coordination
- Serve as the lead point of contact for county museum counterparts and historical organizations
- Foster relationships and maintain communication with local museums, historical societies, and heritage partners
- Assist with coordinating shared initiatives, collaboration, and information
Administrative Support
- Maintain visitor logs and basic records
- Assist with inventory tracking and documentation of collections
- Support planning and preparation for programs, tours, and special events
- Provide updates to leadership on museum needs, opportunities, and visitor feedback
Qualifications
Required
- Interest in history, heritage preservation, museums, or related fields
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Friendly, welcoming demeanor and comfort working with the public
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
- Attention to detail and care in handling historical materials
Preferred
- Experience working or volunteering in a museum, archive, or historical organization
- Experience with cataloging, archiving, or exhibit support
- Interest and background in history, public history, museum studies, education, or a related field
Organizational Role & Additional Support
This position is part of the Belmont County Tourism Council staff and contributes to the broader mission of promoting and supporting heritage tourism throughout the county.
While the primary responsibility is the operation and care of the Belmont County Heritage Museum, the Curator may occasionally assist with tourism-related programs, events, and initiatives at the discretion of the Executive Director. This may include helping with event setup, visitor engagement, or on-site support during special events.
This position will remain open until filled, with review of candidates to begin immediately.
