About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Safety Officer to lead all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) activities for a civil contractor on a major construction project. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and maintaining a strong safety culture while ensuring compliance with client requirements, local regulations, and industry best practices.
This is a hands-on leadership role requiring daily interaction with project management, subcontractors, and client representatives to achieve a zero-incident workplace.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all site health, safety, and environmental programs.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, client safety standards, and company policies.
- Conduct daily site inspections and safety audits.
- Facilitate new employee and subcontractor safety orientations.
- Develop and deliver toolbox talks and safety training.
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions, and implement corrective actions.
- Review and approve Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs), and Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), as applicable.
- Review and approve Daily Pre-Task Plans
- Monitor high-risk activities including:
- Working at heights
- Confined space entry
- Crane and lifting operations
- Electrical work and lockout/tagout
- Excavation and trenching
- Hot work
- Track safety metrics and prepare weekly and monthly reports.
- Coordinate emergency response planning and drills.
- Build positive relationships with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
- Promote continuous improvement and proactive hazard identification throughout the project.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Construction Management, or a related field (preferred).
- 5–10 years of construction safety experience.
- Minimum 3 years supporting large commercial, industrial, or infrastructure construction projects.
- OSHA 30 required
- Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety standards.
- Professional certifications such as CHST, CSP, ASP, or equivalent are highly desirable.
- Current First Aid/CPR certification.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and digital safety management platforms.
