Position: Salary/Hours Responsible to: Days of Employment: Board Approved: Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Range H Superintendent/Principal or designee 181 Days (10 months) 2-10-15    
                                                  GENERAL DESCRIPTION:            Works under the direction and supervision of the Speech-Language Pathologist, completes a variety of tasks such as, but not limited to activities designed to develop pre-language and language skills, oral-motor control for speech production, vocalization, and use of assistive technology devices for communication.  The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant works with students who have identified speech and language disorders as well as other disabilities.   DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Any one position may not include all of the listed duties, nor do all of the listed examples include all tasks that may be found in positions within this classification.             
  1. Conduct speech and language screenings, without interpretation, using screening protocols developed by the supervising Speech-Language Pathologist.
  2. Provide direct treatment assistance to students under the supervision of the credentialed Speech-Language Pathologist.
  3. Follow and implement documented treatment plans or protocols developed by the supervising Speech-Language Pathologist.
  4. Document student progress toward meeting established objectives, and report information to supervising Speech-Language Pathologist.
  5. Assist Speech-Language Pathologist during assessments, assisting with formal documentation, preparing materials, and performing clerical duties.
  6. Prepare therapy materials and/or equipment for use in the classroom and therapy activities.
  7. Adapt and/or modify instructional material and/or equipment as determined by student needs and abilities for teacher use in classroom.
  8. Assist in maintaining student records, tallying data, preparing charts, records, graphs, and reports.
  9. Assist in organizing classroom activities such as displaying educational materials, arranging furniture to facilitate instructional requirements, and credit an orderly and clean classroom environment.
  10. Implement behavior management programs for students as designed by certified staff.
  11. Perform related duties as assigned.
  ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  1. Visual ability to read handwritten or typed documents, and the display screen of various office equipment and machines.
  2. Ability to write, type and use calculator.
  3. Able to conduct verbal conversation.
  4. Able to hear normal range verbal conversation (approximately 60 decibels).
  5. Able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend and walk.
  6. Able to sit for sustained periods of time.
  7. Able to climb slopes, stairs, steps, ramps and ladders.
  8. Able to lift up to 25 pounds.
  9. Able to carry up to 25 pounds.
  10. Able to exhibit full range of motion for:
    · shoulder external rotation and internal rotation
    · shoulder abduction and adduction
    · elbow flexion and extension
    · shoulder extension and flexion
    · back lateral flexion
    · hip flexion and extension
    · knee flexion
  11. Able to operate office machines and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  12. Able to demonstrate manual dexterity necessary to operate calculator, typewriter, and/or computer keyboard at the required speed and accuracy.
  KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:
  • Ability to work positively with students, staff and parents.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of office machines.
  • Knowledge of computers and attendance accounting.
  • Ability to keep and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to work on a variety of tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions.
  WORK ENVIRONMENT: Busy office.   PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.   EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill is qualifying.  Evidence of qualifications may include:
  •  Associate degree and/or graduation from speech-language pathology assistant certificate program; or
  • Bachelors degree in speech-language pathology or communication disorders; and
  • Current registration with the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
  OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid California driver’s license
  • Own reliable transportation and verification of insurance coverage (mileage reimbursable)
