General Description: Performs general duties as a Health Inspector for the Bell County Public Health RFD and Vector.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide information about services offered through Bell County Public Health and partners associated with retail food safety and sanitation.
  • Educate the public concerning food safety and sanitation.
  • Read and interpret various County and City ordinances and adopted codes as well as State and Federal Rules and Regulations pertaining to Food Safety and Sanitation.
  • Perform regulated inspections at food service establishments, schools, foster homes, daycares and other qualified locations.
  • Inspect and investigate complaints associated within the scope of RFD responsibilities.
  • Review and prepare Retail Food Dealer Permit Applications for new and operating food service operations.
  • Attend, obtain, and maintain local, state, and federal training/ certification for job duties.
  • Aide facilities in reviewing and analyzing methods/techniques in new /operating facilities to modify daily operations to remain in accordance with current food safety and sanitation codes/regulations. Assist with creating cleaning schedules, HAACP plans, workflow charts, etc.
  • Assist office staff as necessary to supplement proper functioning of division. Be familiar with basic office operations. Assist in office operation as necessary.
  • Assist is surveillance and monitoring of vectors in Bell County, Texas.
  • Assist, as directed by RFD Director or Health District Director, other divisions within Bell County Public Health for special needs within the context of job knowledge and skills.
  • Participate in professional development activities to maintain and gain knowledge within the field.
  • Serve as part of public health emergency response efforts, as needed.
  • Must have competent communication skills. (written and oral).
  • Must have competent reading comprehension skills to allow for accurate interpretation of laws and other information that may shape the conduct of inspections in the retail food and vector industry.
  • Must have competent organizational skills; be proficient in time management, and capable of translating these skills into job performance that allows for accomplishment of tasks/duties within the RFD.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties and responsibilities necessary to allow for accomplishment of the requirements of the position.
  • Must have the ability to work autonomously in various settings.
  • Ability to multitask and work as a team player.
  • Must be dependable and consistent.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • An associate’s degree or higher from a college or university with course work in public health, environmental health, culinary arts, food science, life sciences, natural, and/or applied sciences is required.
  • Spanish/English bilingual preferred but not required.
  • Possession of a valid Texas driver's license.
  • Must have own transportation to and from work.
  • Must be able to lift supplies, materials and/or equipment pertaining to job weighing up to 20 lbs.
  • Knowledge/use of Word and Excel. SAFE experience preferred.
  • Competent organizational and time management skills.
  • Competent communication skills – written, oral, and public relations.
