Job Requirements

  • Strong experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting utility-scale solar PV systems.
  • Working knowledge of single-axis tracker systems, including tracker controllers, motors, slew drives, dampers, communication issues, alignment problems, and mechanical failures.
  • Experience with central inverter platforms, including startup, shutdown, fault resets, insulation monitoring faults, DC input issues, AC output issues, cooling systems, filters, fans, contactors, and power electronics alarms.
  • Ability to troubleshoot PV strings, combiner boxes, DC feeders, inverters, transformers, medium-voltage collection systems, and substation equipment.
  • Understanding of DC and AC electrical systems used in large-scale solar power plants.
  • Ability to identify abnormal plant conditions that affect safety, reliability, availability, and production.

High-Voltage Substation Skills

  • Experience working in or around medium-voltage and high-voltage substations.
  • Familiarity with substation equipment including breakers, disconnect switches, hook switches, transformers, PTs, CTs, surge arresters, relays, batteries, chargers, SCADA cabinets, and control circuits.
  • Ability to support switching, LOTO, troubleshooting, inspections, and maintenance activities on medium-voltage and high-voltage equipment.
  • Understanding of substation one-lines, three-lines, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, control circuits, and relay drawings.
  • Ability to identify abnormal equipment conditions such as heating, tracking, corona, oil leaks, gas pressure issues, damaged bushings, loose connections, failed heaters, blown fuses, and control power problems.

Medium-Voltage Cable Systems

  • Experience installing, inspecting, troubleshooting, and repairing medium-voltage underground cable systems used in utility-scale solar collection systems.
  • Skilled in medium-voltage cable splicing and terminations, including shielded cable preparation, insulation removal, semicon removal, conductor preparation, connector installation, stress control, grounding, shielding, and jacket restoration.
  • Experience with common medium-voltage cable accessories, including cold-shrink terminations, heat-shrink terminations, molded splices, separable connectors, elbows, T-body connectors, load-break connectors, dead-break connectors, junction bars, and grounding kits.
  • Ability to identify improper cable preparation, poor workmanship, tracking, contamination, moisture intrusion, shield damage, jacket damage, failed connectors, overheated terminations, and partial-discharge-related defects.
  • Experience performing or supporting medium-voltage cable testing, including insulation resistance testing, VLF withstand testing, tan delta testing, sheath testing, continuity checks, phasing, and grounding verification.
  • Experience locating underground cable faults using appropriate test equipment and methods, including sectionalizing, thumping, surge generation, TDR, arc reflection, acoustic pinpointing, sheath fault locating, and fault confirmation testing.
  • Ability to read underground cable drawings, collection system layouts, trench maps, cable schedules, splice maps, and as-built documentation to support troubleshooting and repair work.
  • Capable of safely isolating, testing, grounding, repairing, and returning medium-voltage cable circuits to service in accordance with site switching, clearance, and LOTO procedures.

Electrical Testing and Troubleshooting

  • Skilled in electrical troubleshooting using meters, insulation resistance testers, clamp meters, phase rotation meters, thermal cameras, and other diagnostic tools.
  • Ability to perform or support insulation resistance testing, continuity checks, voltage checks, control circuit troubleshooting, and basic equipment verification.
  • Experience troubleshooting 24 VDC, 48 VDC, 125 VDC, 120 VAC, 480 VAC, medium-voltage, and high-voltage systems.
  • Ability to safely identify failed components and determine root cause rather than only resetting alarms.
  • Strong understanding of electrical fundamentals, including voltage, current, resistance, power, grounding, bonding, fusing, relays, contactors, and protection circuits.
  • Ability to troubleshoot control power circuits, trip and close circuits, permissives, interlocks, auxiliary contacts, blown fuses, failed relays, failed coils, and loose or damaged wiring.

SCADA, Communications, and Controls

  • Experience using SCADA systems to monitor plant performance, alarms, breaker status, inverter status, tracker status, and metering data.
  • Ability to troubleshoot communication failures involving inverters, trackers, meters, weather stations, relays, RTUs, fiber, Ethernet, serial communication, switches, and network devices.
  • Understanding of plant control systems, curtailment commands, power factor control, reactive power control, and utility dispatch requirements.
  • Ability to distinguish between true equipment failures, communication failures, control logic issues, and operator-command issues.
  • Ability to review alarm history, event logs, device status, and field indications to support accurate troubleshooting.

Safety and Compliance

  • Strong working knowledge of electrical safety practices, including LOTO, arc flash boundaries, shock hazards, test-before-touch, stored energy, and energized work controls.
  • Familiarity with NFPA 70E, OSHA electrical safety requirements, and site-specific switching and clearance procedures.
  • Ability to follow switching orders, clearance procedures, job hazard analyses, energized work permits, and customer safety requirements.
  • Comfortable working around medium-voltage and high-voltage equipment while maintaining strict procedural discipline.
  • Ability to recognize unsafe conditions and stop work when needed.
  • Strong understanding of grounding, verification of absence of voltage, stored-energy hazards, and safe work practices around energized or previously energized equipment.

Mechanical and Field Skills

  • Ability to inspect, troubleshoot, and repair tracker mechanical systems, torque tubes, dampers, module clamps, gearboxes, motors, linkages, and structural components.
  • Experience with basic mechanical work, hand tools, power tools, torque tools, hydraulic tools, and field repair methods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in harsh conditions, including heat, wind, dust, uneven terrain, and remote project sites.
  • Ability to operate or work around utility vehicles, lifts, skid steers, telehandlers, and other site equipment where qualified.
  • Ability to perform field repairs while maintaining workmanship, safety, and equipment reliability standards.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Ability to document troubleshooting steps, test results, corrective actions, equipment deficiencies, and follow-up recommendations.
  • Capable of reading and interpreting OEM manuals, drawings, test reports, commissioning documents, maintenance procedures, and equipment specifications.
  • Ability to write clear daily reports, work summaries, inspection findings, and customer-facing service notes.
  • Strong attention to detail when recording equipment names, device numbers, serial numbers, test values, dates, and alarm history.
  • Ability to maintain accurate documentation for repairs, testing, inspections, outages, and return-to-service activities.

Leadership and Independent Work

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Capable of leading smaller field tasks and coordinating with operations teams, subcontractors, OEMs, and utility representatives.
  • Strong judgment when prioritizing plant issues based on safety, generation impact, reliability, and customer expectations.
  • Ability to mentor junior technicians and support field training.
  • Strong communication skills with operators, managers, engineers, customers, and site personnel.
  • Ability to make sound field decisions while following company procedures, customer requirements, and safe work practices.

Preferred Skills

  • NETA testing experience or similar electrical testing background.
  • Experience with relay testing, relay settings, event records, and protection troubleshooting.
  • Experience with SEL, GE, Siemens, ABB, SMA, Sungrow, Power Electronics, Nextracker, Array Technologies, or similar equipment.
  • Experience with thermal imaging inspections.
  • Experience supporting commissioning, energization, outage work, or major corrective maintenance.
  • Familiarity with NERC, PRC-005, utility interconnection requirements, and power plant compliance tasks.
  • Medium-voltage cable splicing and termination certification or documented field experience.
  • Experience with 15 kV, 25 kV, and 35 kV shielded power cable systems.
  • Experience with underground collection system fault locating and emergency cable repair work.
  • Experience with 3M, TE Connectivity/Raychem, Eaton/Cooper, Elastimold, Prysmian, Southwire, Okonite, or similar medium-voltage cable and accessory systems.
  • CDL, crane, forklift, aerial lift, or telehandler certification.
  • OSHA 10, OSHA 30, NFPA 70E training, CPR/First Aid, or equivalent safety certifications

Pay: $10,000.00 - $13,000.00 per month
