Your Role at BHSN
The Crisis Registered Nurse (RN) works in an environment that is short term, residential care and clinical intervention strategy for individuals who are facing a behavioral health crisis, including individuals who are suicidal, express homicidal ideation, or have a mental health or co-occurring diagnosis and are experiencing acute escalation of mental health symptoms. In addition, the person must be able to contract for safety. Individuals in need of respite are at imminent risk for loss of functional abilities and may raise safety concerns for themselves and others without this level of care. The immediate goal of respite is to provide support to help the individual stabilize and return to their previous level of functioning or as a step down from inpatient hospitalization.

Saturday: 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Sunday: Off
Monday: Off
Tuesday: 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Wednesday: 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Thursday: 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Key Responsibilities
- Adheres to agency policies and procedures regarding confidentiality and HIPAA laws.
- Manages medications that come in and go out of the house on admission, when refills are needed and distributing meds when discharged.
- Completes MARS when clients are admitted and when there are med changes ensures the MAR is correct as the second signature.
- Educates non-licensed staff in self-administration of meds and how to assist those clients that need it with taking their meds. RN will be responsible for ensuring non-licensed staff are trained and complete competency before assisting with meds.
- Comprehensive assessment upon intake include screening for physical health conditions.
- Comprehensive risk assessment and medication management.
- Monitoring for high-risk behaviors.
- Communicates effectively with guests and staff.
- Maintains a professional manner in interacting with guests and staff.
- De-escalates crisis situations as they arise.
- Relapse prevention planning.
- Conflict resolution.
- Share personal experience and encourage mental health wellness and recovery.
- Assist in connection to mental health services, community resources, entitlements and other services as needed.
- Model and utilize Trauma informed techniques and tools as outlined in: Intentional Peer Support, Wellness Recovery Action Plan, Mental Health First Aide, Emotional CPR, Motivational Interviewing, Safe TALK, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, Recovery Options Made Easy, In-House Peer Advocacy Training and Crisis Diversion/Respite House Training, Homelessness Training.
- Adheres to infection control principles.
- Provides guests education and skill building regarding medication and self-care of chronic diseases.
- Maintains the integrity of the medical record.
- Maintains documentation in logs as appropriate in EMR system.
- Recognizes emergency situations and notifies appropriate personnel.
- Attends meetings as required.
- Performs other relevant duties as assigned or requested.
Skills & Qualifications:
- NYS Department of Education Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
- CPR Certification (Required)
- Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team, collaborate across disciplines and programs.
- Broad clinical knowledge of psychiatric disorders, and psychiatric diagnoses.
- Demonstrated ability to work within electronic database management systems
- Valid NYS driver’s license and reliable transportation required for local and regional travel.
- Leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
- Experience in behavioral health, crisis intervention, or community-based care preferred.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus
