Job Summary
The Parent Educator in the Parents as Teachers program is a supportive and supported Home Visitor who plays a crucial role in supporting families by providing education, connecting resources, and offering compassionate guidance to enhance parenting skills and promote healthy child development.
Candidates should possess experience with and compassion toward working with children or families in various capacities. Preferred qualifications include:
- Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in education, special education, early childhood education, child development, social work, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience with infants and toddlers, knowledge of child development principles.
- Excellent organization, time management skills, and self initiating. Demonstrate confidence and ability in oral and written communication skills.
- Reliable car and valid PA driver’s license required, as well as proper clearances (FBI, Child Abuse, Criminal Background Check)
Essential Responsibilities
- Make regular home visits to assigned families to implement the Parents as Teachers model to fidelity.
- Conduct developmental assessments of all children upon program entry and reass when appropriate.
- Develop goals with family and children.
- Responsible for planning and facilitating Group Connections (social-emotional parent and child groups).
- Assist each family in gaining knowledge in the areas of family well-being, child development, attachment, discipline, health, nutrition, safety, sleep, and transitions/routines.
- Together with the parent, reassess the child periodically using standard assessment tools.
- Provide the parent with the Parents as Teachers curriculum materials and support the parent/caregiver in their use.
- Coordinate with other agencies to ensure delivery of high quality, comprehensive services to children and families.
- Coordinate with the school district regarding older siblings living in the home and other services which may be appropriate.
- Coordinate services with Head Start, Pre-K programs, School Districts served.
- Stay informed about current trends in child welfare, behavioral health, and family law.
Additional Role Details: Responsible for designing learning activities within the evidence based curriculum that promote and teach skills for self-regulation, self-advocacy, physical/emotional/mental health, and promote early literacy for school achievement. Parent educators share age-appropriate child development information with parents, help them learn to observe their own child, address their parenting concerns, and engage the family in activities that provide meaningful parent/child interaction.
