Responsibilities
Specimen Collection & Phlebotomy
- Perform phlebotomy procedures competently, including venipuncture, micro-collection, bleeding times, blood cultures, therapeutic phlebotomy, and collection of Blood Bank specimens.
- Ensure positive patient identification prior to all specimen collections.
- Label specimens at the point of service and verify specimen accuracy and integrity.
- Ensure specimens are properly packaged and delivered to Specimen Processing or the main laboratory in a timely manner.
- Demonstrate professional bedside manner, positive attitude, and compassionate interaction with patients and families.
- Serve as a professional representative of the laboratory to patients and clinical staff.
- Perform medical necessity checks prior to outpatient phlebotomy services.
- Obtain, enter, and update patient information in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS).
- Register patients in the HIS, including demographics and insurance information.
- Accurately interpret physician orders, order appropriate tests, and print specimen labels.
- Answer incoming telephone calls to schedule tests, relay accurate information, and respond to STAT draw requests in a timely manner.
- Efficiently direct calls to the appropriate department or individual.
- Prioritize duties to manage workload efficiently and respond to fluctuating volumes and schedule changes.
- Utilize time effectively during lighter workloads to support departmental needs.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe patient drawing area.
- Maintain phlebotomy baskets and carts, ensuring all safety protocols are followed.
- Maintain equipment and inventory of required supplies.
- Adhere strictly to biohazard safety protocols, including:
- Proper disposal of blood collection equipment
- Changing gloves between patients
- Safe use of the pneumatic tube system
- Manual delivery of specimens when required
- Serve as a resource for phlebotomy procedures and laboratory workflows.
- Assist with training and mentoring new employees.
- Strong knowledge of phlebotomy techniques and specimen handling.
- Ability to multitask and adapt quickly to changing priorities.
- Attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy and patient
- Entry-level graduates will be considered.
- Ability to communicate effectively, pleasantly, cooperatively, and discreetly with patients, physicians, hospital employees, and the general public.
- Demonstrates ability to work efficiently and accurately under pressure in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

- BLS - Basic Life Saving certification
- Phlebotomy certification within 1 year
- High school graduate or equivalent
