Job Summary:
The purpose of this job is to provide nursing support to students under the direction of the registered school nurse. Assists the registered school nurse to provide healthcare to students on a daily basis through planned care or as needed for acute needs. Organizes, implements, and maintains comprehensive school health records, adheres to professional standards of care and procedures in local policy, and disseminates health guidance consistent with guidelines from the Virginia Department of Health in conjunction with Virginia Department of Education.
Essential Duties
- Effectively manages the health clinic by following standards of nursing practice, procedures, protocols, and other instructions provided by Health Services.
- Provides essential delegated nursing tasks per protocol and within scope of LPN practice. Tasks include but aren't limited to: first aid, CPR, emergency care, acute and chronic student health needs, medication administration, specialized health procedures, care for students with special education needs, screenings, health related 504 and IEP interventions, and other tasks as directed.
- Collaborates with the registered school nurse in completing assignments, reporting data, and communicating pertinent school health concerns.
- Administers medications and performs procedures and treatments with physician orders under the supervision of the registered school nurse.
- Reviews, tracks, and follows-up with immunizations, conditional enrollments, and physicals.
- Observes students for illness or injury and consults with the registered nurse as needed.
- Conducts routine screenings as required by Code of Virginia, including referrals and follow-up.
- Maintains accurate documentation, records, and confidentiality of information.
- Assists in the maintenance and updating of health records.
- Reports information and concerns to the registered school nurse.
- Conferences with the registered school nurse regarding individual student health care plans.
- Implements student health care plans on all students receiving direct care and others as directed.
- Maintains a safe, clean, and organized work area.
- Performs such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal or Supervisor of Health Services.
Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) License from the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Health Professionals and experience as a licensed practical nurse.
Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
Physical Demands
Must have the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity, hear and understand speech at normal levels, speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly, physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds, bend, stoop, climb stairs, reach overhead and walk briskly.
