The Bedford County Sheriff's Office compensates current Virginia DCJS certified law enforcement officers for up to 5 years of experience when determining their starting salary. Exclusions include jail officers, courtroom security officers, sworn security officers, and any other sworn officer that has not conducted policing similar to the responsibilities of a Bedford County Sheriff's Deputy.


Incentives to join Bedford County Sheriff's Office include:


  • All Deputy Sheriff's receive a take home vehicle if their residence is located within 5 air miles of Bedford County.
  • 80 hours of sick time and 80 hours of vacation time awarded upon hire.

  • Overtime pay is provided in lieu of compensatory time. Opportunities for overtime or extra duties pay are available including lake patrol, community events, football games, extra patrol shifts, DMV grants, church security, inmate work detail and more.

Qualified applicants, if offered a position, may be asked to serve in the following positions based on department need, to be determined upon hire:


  • Field Operations Deputy
  • School Resource Officer
  • Bailiff
  • Animal Control Officer
  • Civil Process
  • ICAC Investigator

This position acts as a representative of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office. General duties include enforcing criminal laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia.


  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must possess a valid Virginia operator's license at the time of employment with less than a (-5) point balance.
  • Must be (21) years of age by date of hire or completion of training academy.
  • Must not have any felony convictions; a misdemeanor conviction may be grounds for dismissal but will be looked at on a case-by-case basis.
  • Must not use tobacco products on or off duty to ensure compliance with the Virginia Heart and Lung Laws.

Education/Experience:


  • Must be a High School graduate or possess a General Education Degree Certificate or equivalent.
  • Must be a Virginia Certified Law Enforcement Officer in good standing.

Special/Additional Requirements:


Subject to a complete criminal history and background investigation, drug screening, medical screening, polygraph, psychological and Lawfit physical agility assessment all with acceptable results. Will be required to work beyond a normal schedule to include rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime to meet the needs of the department. This position is designated as essential personnel. In accordance with the County's personnel policy, essential personnel are critical to the continuation of key operations and services and are expected to report to work, unless otherwise directed by management, in all weather conditions.

Notary Options:

Bedford County Sheriff's Office: A notary is available during regular business hours. Applicants may complete notarization and submit all paperwork in one visit.

Other Notary Locations: Any licensed notary public may be used, including those at banks, law offices, shipping centers, or public libraries.

The application process typically last 6-12 weeks. Candidates with current Virginia law enforcement certification or who are currently attending pre-employment certification programs will be given preference.
