Department: Bedford County Property Assessor Full/Part Time: Full Time

Position: Field Appraiser Status: Non-Exempt

Job Summary: The job of the Field Appraiser is a supportive role to the Bedford County Property Assessor. Work includes performing routine, non-complex property appraisals and assessments to obtain valuations for property tax purposes. This position also provides office clerical assistance. The Field Appraiser reports directly to the Bedford County Property Assessor.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to use hands and fingers to grasp, feel, and operate a computer and other modern office equipment
  • Ability to reach with hands and arms
  • Ability to communicate verbally and effective auditory function while performing field assignments
  • Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
  • Close, distance, and color vision along with peripheral vison and ability to adjust focus required

Work Environment: Work is performed both indoors in an open office setting with moderate office noise levels as well as outdoors conducting field work in all weather conditions.

Essential Functions:

The following are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities.

  • Assists the public upon entering the office
  • Performs filing duties for Assessor Records
  • Answers incoming calls to the office and assist with inquires and requests in a timely manner
  • Works with other offices such as the City of Shelbyville, DREMC on receipt of final completion notices of electrical permits issued
  • Provides copies of parcel ID information upon request
  • Routinely checks notices for completion of construction on new improvements
  • Assists with the review of approximately 5,462 to 6,069 properties per year
  • Assists with any needed field check to assure accuracy of new improvements assigned to parcel records
  • Keys/Logs in the computer system all new construction and additions on residential and commercial parcels as measured and listed
  • Keys/Logs into the computer system structural changes, address changes, etc.
  • Assists with the distribution of the office mail
  • Edits appraisal cards on new construction, additions, and field review
  • Compose and type routine correspondence using regular mail and email
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Knowledge of the office practice and procedures

  • Ability to multi-task and work in fast paced environment
  • Ability to adhere to Personnel Policy and Ethics Policy
  • Knowledge of safety protocol
  • Effective communication skills including written, verbal, and listening
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, rations, and proportions to practical situations
  • Ability to solve practical problems and identify appropriate resolutions
  • Willingness to learn new programs
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs, including but not limited to Outlook, Excel, Word

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent GED Diploma
  • 1-3 years' experience desired
  • Possess and maintain a current TN Driver's License
  • Successfully pass a background check, drug screen, and physical
