Seasonal Maintenance Engineer – Beaver Island Boat Company
Are you a licensed Marine Engineer, Diesel Mechanic, or experienced Marine/Automotive technician looking for a great seasonal opportunity on the water?
We have the perfect summer position for you at the Beaver Island Boat Company! This role keeps our ferry vessels, docks, buildings, and equipment running safely and reliably across beautiful Lake Michigan from May through September. You’ll handle troubleshooting, routine maintenance, and emergency repairs with short stays on Beaver Island during the busy summer months.
Licensed Marine Engineer preferred, but we will strongly consider the right candidate with strong diesel, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical experience.
Housing assistance available in Charlevoix (no pets at this time).
Job Title: Seasonal Maintenance Engineer
Reports to: Senior Captain (vessel-related duties) | President (other duties)
Season: May through September 2026
Position Summary
As Seasonal Maintenance Engineer, you’ll be responsible for the mechanical health and reliability of our vessels and company assets during the peak ferry season. You’ll perform preventative and emergency repairs, maintain equipment, and work closely with captains to keep downtime to a minimum while ensuring safety for passengers and freight.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee maintenance and repair of vessels, buildings, docks, vehicles, forklifts, and all company machinery/equipment.
- Perform emergency repairs and preventative maintenance with minimal disruption to service.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, diesel, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
- Conduct cutting, welding, and fabrication projects as needed.
- Maintain clean, organized engine rooms, storage, and repair areas.
- Manage inventory of tools, parts, and supplies.
- Supervise proper waste disposal and follow all safety procedures.
- Keep detailed equipment logs and records.
- Provide input and recommendations on operations and schedules.
- Fulfill Senior Deckhand and Deckhand responsibilities when needed.
- Coordinate all maintenance with the Senior Captain and report issues promptly.
Qualifications
- Solid background in diesel mechanics, hydraulics, electrical systems, and general vessel/equipment maintenance.
- Experience with welding and fabrication (required).
- Familiarity with U.S. Coast Guard regulations for inspected passenger vessels (preferred or must be willing to learn).
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work well under pressure and make quick, sound decisions.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate various vehicles/equipment.
- Self-motivated, safety-focused team player.
- All qualifications required for Senior Deckhand and Deckhand positions (physical fitness, etc.).
Preferred: Licensed Marine Engineer or equivalent professional experience.
