Assistant to the Children’s Librarian
Beaver Area Memorial Library
This part-time person will assist the Children’s Librarian with in-person and virtual activities centered on literacy for children ages 0-17. Some duties include preparing crafts and materials, leading Baby & Me story times (and other story time and group visits if the Children’s Librarian is not available), and collection maintenance.
Other responsibilities include:
· Circulation/desk duties including checking in and out books, answering the phone, answering patron questions, and providing assistance to patrons with printing, scanning, and faxing.
· Shelving and organizing in both the adult and children’s area as needed.
· Monitoring and cleaning the children’s area to keep it neat, safe and ready for public use.
· Assist in keeping flyers, displays, and other information current for the public.
· Cataloging children’s paperbacks, puzzles, CDs, kits, etc.
· Other duties and special projects including assisting other staff members, as needed.
· Maintain confidentiality of patron records in accordance with library policy.
· Work cooperatively with staff and volunteers.
During the summer months when we have additional children’s programs, the employee may be asked to assist with the following:
- Processing, maintain, and helping users navigate the online summer reading challenge through the Beanstack online platform.
- Managing program registrations online, by phone, and in-person.
- Assisting directly with school-age programs such as planning STEAM Days and others as requested by the Children’s Librarian.
Qualifications include:
· High School Diploma or Associate/Bachelor’s degree
· Experience working with children, teens and families preferred
· Customer service experience
· Technology/Computer skills
· Ability to work with diverse population
· Knowledge of children’s literature and literacy practices
· Ability to lift, bend, shelve materials, etc.
· Ability to organize, multitask, and work independently.
The employee is expected to work the hours assigned, about 10-15 hours a week. The schedule is generally consistent from week to week and will typically be distributed one month in advance. This position will include alternate Saturday hours as part of the regular schedule.
