Beat the Streets Baltimore Junior Solar Sprint Lead STEM x Wrestling: Innovation & Academic Accelerator Camp | 2026 Summer Program
Site: Mount Saint Joseph High School | Dates: June 29 – July 30, 2026 | Schedule: Monday – Thursday | Classification: 1099 Independent Contractor
Company Description Beat the Streets – Baltimore (BTS) is a fully accredited member of the Beat the Streets National network, partnering with Baltimore City public and charter schools to deliver after-school wrestling programs. Founded in 2012, BTS uses wrestling as a vehicle to engage students in school, structured activities, and mentoring relationships. The organization combines wrestling, tutoring, and mentoring to support students’ physical, academic, and social development. BTS currently supports programs at multiple schools across the Greater Baltimore area, including Cherry Hill, Roland Park, and City Springs Elementary/Middle Schools. Its goal is to expand this network to reach more young people and increase their opportunities for academic success and college admission.
Role Description The STEM Teacher - JSS Lead is a contract, on-site role based in Baltimore, MD, responsible for leading STEM instruction and enrichment within BTS’s Junior Scholar Series (JSS) program. This summer's Innovation & Academic Accelerator Camp at Mount Saint Joseph serves 50 middle school students (grades 3–8) over 20 instructional days. The JSS Lead owns the full 5-week Junior Solar Sprint build arc from materials introduction through a live race on July 30.
The Junior Solar Sprint Lead designs and delivers a hands-on solar vehicle engineering curriculum for middle school campers. You plan each session, manage materials and safety, facilitate the build process in a group setting, and bring campers to a working race-ready vehicle by the end of Week 5. You work alongside wrestling coaches and academic staff as part of an integrated daily schedule — the STEM block rotates through both groups of 25 each day.
The role also collaborates with program staff, coaches, and school partners, participates in planning meetings, and supports a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment for all participants.
Deliver daily 60-min STEM sessions to rotating groups of 25. Prepare all materials, tools, and equipment before each session. Enforce lab safety protocols throughout all build phases. Track team progress week over week and adjust pacing as needed. Coach design thinking: guide iteration, not just assembly. Coordinate July 30 race logistics with BTS staff. Document student work and flag participation issues to the site supervisor. Participate in pre-camp orientation.
Qualifications
Engineering background — mechanical, electrical, or related field. Classroom or youth instruction experience preffered. Comfortable managing hands-on build projects in a group setting. Experience with maker/fab tools, solar kits, or robotics a strong plus. Reliable, organized, and able to prep materials independently. Available for all 20 instructional days plus orientation.
