Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented Fleet Mechanical Inspector to join our maintenance operations team. This role is responsible for conducting routine visual inspections of fleet vehicles and heavy equipment to ensure safety, cleanliness, and proper maintenance. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with pickups, DOT haul trucks, and yellow iron equipment (e.g., dozers, excavators) and be able to identify mechanical or safety issues in the field.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine visual inspections on fleet vehicles including pickups, DOT haul trucks, and yellow iron dirt equipment
- Check and record levels of engine oil, transmission fluid, hydraulic oil, coolant, and inspect cab filters, engine air filters, and recirculation filters
- Identify visible signs of wear, damage, or missing components on all equipment
- Ensure interior and cargo areas of vehicles are clean and free of debris
- Document all findings by unit number, noting items or issues requiring attention
- Flag and report safety hazards such as cracked windows, flat/split tires, or any defect that makes a unit unsafe for public roadway use
- Use a laptop and/or smartphone to record inspection reports and log GPS locations via drop pins
- Work independently, traveling to different job sites and equipment yards
- Communicate findings promptly to the Maintenance Supervisor and Fleet Manager
Requirements
- Mechanical knowledge or experience working with heavy dirt equipment such as dozers, excavators, etc.
- Experience with fleet vehicles, haul trucks, and pickups
- Must be able to speak, read, and write in English
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Comfortable working outdoors and around active job sites
- Ability to work weekends if required
- Proficient using laptops, smartphones, and GPS apps like Google Maps
- Willingness to drive for extended periods between job sites
Preferred Skills
- Previous experience in a mechanical inspection, diesel tech, or fleet maintenance support role
- Familiarity with DOT standards and pre-trip inspection requirements
- Strong organizational and observational skills
