Position Summary:
The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for directing all activities related to the maintenance, care, and improvement of the golf courses, practice facilities, grounds, and maintenance operations. This position oversees agronomic planning, staff leadership, budget management, water and irrigation systems, and equipment programs while ensuring playing conditions meet or exceed KemperSports standards.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with strong desert turf experience, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage people, resources, and assets effectively in a year-round, 36-hole golf environment.
Major Duties:
- Develop and manage the annual maintenance budget and operating plan in alignment with company objectives.
- Plan, schedule, hire, train, and supervise all Course & Grounds staff while maintaining labor efficiency.
- Maintain golf courses, practice areas, and surrounding grounds in optimal playing condition year-round.
- Oversee all irrigation, drainage, pumping, and water management systems with a focus on conservation.
- Develop and implement agronomic programs including fertilization, aeration, cultural practices, and IPM.
- Supervise capital projects such as driving range renovations, irrigation upgrades, and turf improvements.
- Ability to proactively develop systematic action plans and hold applicable staff members accountable for proper execution.
- Manage equipment maintenance, repair, replacement, and preventative maintenance programs.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations including OSHA and chemical handling.
- Maintain clean, organized, and compliant maintenance facilities and employee areas.
- Manage purchasing, inventory control, and vendor relationships.
- Lead employee recruitment, training, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions.
- Maintain accurate records for labor, chemical applications, equipment maintenance, and safety meetings.
- Submit all required operational, financial, and budgetary reports in a timely manner.
- Stay current with industry trends, best practices, and continuing education.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support overall property operations.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma required; college degree in turfgrass management, agronomy, horticulture, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a Golf Course Superintendent or Senior Assistant Superintendent, preferably in a desert or Southwest environment.
- Demonstrated experience in budget development and fiscal management; staff leadership and development; water management and irrigation systems; and equipment and capital planning.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a high-volume, year-round operation.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated and proven experience in budget development, fiscal management, strategic planning, and staff management.
- Experienced in creating successful programming which is designed to maximize the guest experience as well as existing and potential revenue opportunities.
- Willingness to work flexible hours including early mornings, weekends, and holidays.
- Positive attitude, professional manner and appearance.
