What You’ll Do
As a Lactation Consultant, you’ll report to the Director, Patient Care Services. Responsibilities include providing lactation management services to expectant and new parents. Provides breast-feeding training sessions for expectant and new mothers. Also provides lactation management services to clients on an outpatient basis. Oversees the retail sale (or rental) of breast-feeding related equipment.
Lactation Consultant Job Responsibilities
Provide lactation management services to inpatient and outpatient breastfeeding mothers
Conduct daily bedside lactation rounds and consultations
Support mothers with breastfeeding issues, including post-discharge follow-up and phone consultations
Collaborate and communicate with physicians, practitioners, and obstetrical teams
Serve as a breastfeeding resource for hospital staff and participate in education and outreach
Plan and organize outpatient lactation services and activities
Manage breast pump rentals and breastfeeding-related supplies
Refer mothers to appropriate community and external resources
Complete documentation, reports, and quality assurance activities
Perform additional duties and projects as assigned
What You Bring
As a Lactation Consultant, this role requires in-depth knowledge of lactation principles and the ability to effectively teach breastfeeding skills to mothers while delivering educational programs to individuals and groups of varying ages. The position involves collaborating with multiple patient care units, including Mother/Baby, NICU, and Pediatrics, and working with providers across different levels of care while adhering to the hospital’s philosophy and standards for lactation management. Strong independent practice skills are essential, particularly as an outpatient educator, along with the ability to support individuals and families who may be under stress. The role also demands familiarity with external breastfeeding resources, strong planning, organizational, and analytical abilities, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and proficiency in using audio-visual equipment and teaching materials to support effective education.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required
Experience working with new mothers and breastfeeding issues required
IBCLC certification required or must be obtained within two years of hire
BCLS/CPR certification required within three years of hire
Must maintain current CPR certification
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum of two years of related experience preferred
Spanish-speaking ability preferred
