Patient Sitter (MHO)

Position Overview

As a Patient Sitter, you play a critical role in maintaining a safe and supportive environment for patients who require continuous 1:1 observation. Under the supervision of a licensed nurse, you will monitor and assist patients to ensure their safety, comfort, and dignity during their inpatient stay. This position is ideal for individuals seeking experience in healthcare and those currently enrolled in a nursing or healthcare program.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Observation & Safety

• Provide constant, direct observation of assigned patients to ensure safety and prevent harm.

• Remain alert and positioned to maintain full visibility of the patient, including during bathroom visits.

• Never leave the patient unattended; accompany them at all times as directed.

• Promptly communicate any concerns, unusual behaviors, or safety risks to the RN or physician.

Supportive Patient Care (with Training & Competency)

• Assist with basic care tasks such as ambulation, turning/repositioning, feeding, toileting, oral care, bathing, and taking/documenting vital signs and intake/output, under the supervision of clinical staff.

• Contribute to a calm and therapeutic environment while maintaining patient dignity and confidentiality.

Team & Department Contribution

• Assist with departmental activities and support other team members as needed.

• Complete additional duties or projects as assigned to support unit effectiveness.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required.

• Current enrollment in a nursing or healthcare-related program preferred.

• Previous patient care experience is a plus but not required.

Skills & Competencies

• Ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions, including medical terminology.

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with patients, visitors, and team members.

• Proficiency in basic computer use and ability to accurately document care.

• Strong initiative, focus, and ability to work independently in a patient care setting.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Requires frequent walking, standing, bending, and the ability to lift or reposition patients (up to 50 lbs with assistance).

• May be exposed to biohazards and patient-related equipment.

• Must be able to remain alert and attentive for extended periods in varied clinical situations.

Organizational Requirements

• Attend department meetings and complete all required trainings and competencies.

• Maintain required certifications (e.g., BCLS/CPR) and comply with health and safety regulations.
