The Executive Director of System Facilities Operations and Management provides strategic and operational leadership for facilities operations and maintenance across the organization. Reporting to the Vice President of Facilities, Construction, and Real Estate, with matrixed accountability to executive leadership at individual sites, this role collaborates closely with system and site leaders to plan, develop, and implement best-in-class facilities management strategies.

The Executive Director is responsible for long-term facility condition assessments, infrastructure strategies, and ten-year capital renewal planning. This position ensures operational excellence by driving performance against industry benchmarks and utilizing LEAN methodology and continuous improvement frameworks. The role champions the development of departmental guidelines and practices aligned with the organization’s Mission, Vision, and Values, while also setting the vision and direction for facilities operations and maintenance teams.

This leader also oversees relationships and contracts with architectural firms, external project management consultants, service vendors, contractors, and state agencies. Success is achieved through collaborative engagement with key internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, operational leaders, and executive leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Execution

  • Direct facilities operations systemwide, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and service excellence.

  • Develop and manage operational and capital budgets using benchmarking, data analytics, and LEAN principles.

  • Oversee the development and execution of long-term maintenance and infrastructure renewal plans.

  • Utilize enterprise data systems for operational decision-making.

Leadership & Talent Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop facilities leadership and staff across the system.

  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and high-performance culture focused on accountability, engagement, and retention.

  • Execute talent management initiatives including performance evaluation, coaching, succession planning, and leadership development.

  • Ensure compliance with scope of practice laws and labor guidelines.

Continuous Improvement & Change Management

  • Drive a culture of innovation, process improvement, and proactive problem-solving.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement quality initiatives and enhance safety and efficiency.

  • Leverage performance data to improve outcomes and foster adaptability in a rapidly changing environment.

Strategic Planning & Execution

  • Develop and implement system-wide facility plans in alignment with organizational objectives.

  • Monitor and adjust strategies to ensure optimal outcomes in quality, cost, efficiency, and employee engagement.

  • Represent facilities operations in system-wide strategic discussions and planning efforts.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure consistent compliance with all federal, state, and local regulatory requirements (e.g., JCAHO, OSHA, NFPA, EPA).

  • Stay current on industry standards and incorporate best practices into facility operations.

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Attend and actively participate in leadership meetings and development sessions.

  • Maintain required licenses, certifications, and continuing education standards.

  • Follow all health, safety, and emergency preparedness protocols.


Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or a related field.

  • Master’s degree preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum 15 years of progressive facilities management experience required.

  • Minimum 10 years of leadership experience, preferably in a complex healthcare or multi-site environment.

Certifications:

  • Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) required within 12 months of hire.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Strong knowledge of regulatory codes and compliance standards (JCAHO, OSHA, NFPA, EPA, etc.).

  • Proven expertise in budget development, strategic planning, and infrastructure operations.

  • Effective communicator and relationship builder with strong analytical and decision-making skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead through systems thinking, project management, and cross-functional collaboration.


Working Conditions

  • Primarily office-based with frequent site visits across the health system.

  • Some travel is required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must possess the physical stamina and ability to perform essential job functions in both office and facility environments.
