JOB DESCRIPTION
Position: Custodian
Reports to: Supervisor of Facilities & Grounds
Employment Status: Beachwood Union of Support Staff (BUSS) Contract
I. Position Summary
- To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, and clean place in which to learn and develop
II. Required Education, Experience & Qualifications
- High school education or equivalent
- One year of cleaner or custodial work experience or completion of custodial training program preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of the basic techniques of electrical repair, maintenance, carpentry, and plumbing
- Knowledge of school district safety measures and acceptable cleaning practices
- Meet all health requirements mandated by law
- Satisfactory completion of BCII and FBI background checks
- Possession of a valid motor vehicle license
III. Job Responsibilities & Duties
- Ensure exterior doors are locked/unlocked daily at appropriate times
- Assist in coordinating emergency procedures
- Coordinate, setup, and cleanup of scheduled meetings or events
- Maintain and clean areas assigned, but not limited to:
- Clean and sanitize restrooms
- Clean and sanitize classrooms
- Sweep and dust in assigned area and dispose of trash
- Clean interior and exterior glass and maintain hallways
- Keep building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat, clean and where appropriate, salted (ice-free) in season, along with landscaping beds free of weeds
- Strip and wax floors, as needed
- Make minor electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and maintenance repairs as needed, and report those that cannot be repaired to the maintenance staff
- Maintain all housekeeping equipment, (e.g. vacuum cleaners, carpet extractor, etc.) and clean after each use
- Replace ceiling tiles as needed
- Clean carpets with carpet extractor
- Buff floors with burnisher
- Replace light bulbs as required
- Snow removal via means of snowblower
- Perform other duties as assigned
IV. Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Knowledge of light maintenance, custodial, and cleaning
- Ability to use industrial cleaning materials and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Ability to interact in a positive manner with staff, students, parents/guardians and the public
- Ability to promote good public relations
- Ability to perform sustained physical labor in both heat and cold
- Ability to work around standard cleaning chemicals
- Ability to monitor activities throughout building
- Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
- Ability to maintain a high energy level throughout the day
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends
V. Personal Conduct Requirements
- The employee shall exercise honesty and integrity in his/her relationships with the Board of Education and the administration
- The employee shall promote a positive image of the District through exemplary personal conduct
- The employee shall report misconduct or violations of policy or procedure following established Board policy
- The employee shall actively support the efforts of the Board of Education and the Superintendent in the pursuit of District goals and interests
- The employee shall not disrupt District operations or undermine the positions of the Board of Education and administration
- The employee shall demonstrate the ability to interact in a positive manner with staff, students and the public and promote a positive image of the district through exemplary personal conduct including but not limited to:
- The ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing, with tact, diplomacy and excellent grammar
- The demonstration of effective listening skills
- Remaining free of any alcohol or controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Beachwood City School District
VI. Physical Demands
- Ability to hear and speak, read and write, sit and/or stand for extended periods of time, use hands to operate a computer and other equipment, kneel, bend at the waist, reach overhead – above the shoulders and horizontally, to retrieve and store files and supplies, ability to lift, carry, push and pull items up to a maximum of eighty (80) pounds.
