GENERAL PURPOSE

 

Under general supervision, leads camp program activities at facility and off-site locations; supervises and ensures safety and well-being of campers in program and during transportation to and from field trips; completes camp activity and safety records; and performs other related duties as required.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the camp.

 

  1. Provides direct supervision and care for approximately 8 to 10 campers on a daily basis. 
  2. Leads and engages in age-specific programs, activities, arts and crafts, games and recreational activities outlined in the daily camp schedule.
  3. Engages in the set-up and break down of camp activities, including preparation and clean-up for crafts, games and activities.
  4. Keeps a consistently positive attitude and shows interest and excitement in scheduled activities and seeks ways to include all campers in every activity.
  5. Arranges skits and leads songs with campers. 
  6. Supervises campers in Adventure Room play structure and monitors play at the rope course, gymnasium, rock wall and other assigned areas.
  7. Supervises climbing activities, including securing harnesses and attaching campers to automatic belay system at the outdoor rock wall.
  8. Reports any safety issues within the facility to the Camp Supervisor or Programs Manager and assists with the on-going collection of customer evaluation and feedback data.
  9. Explains and enforces AdventurePlex camp policies and procedures including those related to disciplinary situations, health and wellness, water safety, transportation rules and mandated reporting and handling of emergency situations
  10. Demonstrates standards of cleanliness, punctuality, sharing, honesty and teamwork to campers in setting a good example
  11. Maintain effective relationships with campers, parents and AdventurePlex staff.  
  12. Notifies appropriate staff of camper illness and injuries immediately; completes appropriate incident and accident reports in a timely manner.
  13. Alerts the Camp Supervisor of problems involving campers and programs and suggests potential solutions.
  14. While on field trips, follows all trip protocols, including executing head counts and establishing buddy systems.
  15. Participates in staff meetings and training processes and assists with special projects.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES

 

Any combination equivalent to experience, education, and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying.   A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

 

EDUCATION/TRAINING:

Currently pursuing or completed a High School Diploma or equivalent. Completion of college level course work in recreation, physical education or a closely related field is highly desirable. 

 

EXPERIENCE:

One or more years of experience in community services and/or recreational activities for various age groups. Minimum of six months prior work (or volunteer) experience with children. Knowledge of recreational programs, day camp activities, and arts and crafts.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must be 16 years of age or older.  Applicants under the age of 18 must provide a California Work Permit. First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) methods; appropriate safety precautions and procedures.  Must be able to successfully pass background check, tuberculosis test and drug screen. Must possess proficiency in Microsoft programs and ability to learn other software programs used at facility (point of sale).   

 

PHYSICAL STANDARDS

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY ELEMENTS:

 

The sensory demands of the job typically require hearing, talking and seeing. The position requires close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The job involves work requiring frequent standing and walking between play and program areas to monitor the use of the facilities. Wrist flexing and finger dexterity are needed for some play activities and to operate standard office equipment.   Employees in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel during play and arts and crafts activities, reach, push and pull drawers open and closed or lock and unlock cabinets and doors to retrieve supplies and play items.  Employees in this classification occasionally lift and carry recreational equipment, games, arts supplies and records that typically weigh less than 20 pounds.  Employees in this classification climb ladders to open and close the rock wall.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS:

 

Employees work in outdoors and indoors environments, with exposure to variable temperature and weather conditions and moderate to loud noise during indoor and outdoor play, including up to 95 decibels level.  Depending upon position assignment, the employee may be exposed to chlorine, acids and other chemicals in water play settings.  Employees may interact with upset campers, parents and staff in interpreting and enforcing camp rules and safety procedures.
