Position Overview
The Supplemental Health Solutions (SHS) Underwriter III will provide group and product specific underwriting for our Supplemental Health products for our group clients. This role will work with Sales and Product teams, supporting product revisions, new group sales, existing case renewals and partnering with our key distributors and vendors.
This position will report to the Manager of Ancillary Underwriting. The office for this position sits in Oakbrook, IL, however, this position is open to remote capacity.
Essential Elements
- List the duties and responsibilities the incumbent would be spending at least 15 – 20% of their time doing in this position.
- Direct underwriting of Supplemental Health lines – Accident, Critical Illness, Hospital Indemnity, Fixed Indemnity, Life, and Disability for group clients of various size
- Loss Ratio Management- Drive persistency and maintain appropriate loss ratios for the Supplemental Health business
- Growth Management- Drive profitable growth of the SHS block by maximizing premium from new sales and renewal for the Supplemental Health business
- Process Improvement- Identify and address opportunities to improve process flows, automation, documentation, and work instructions for the Supplemental Health products
- Span of Influence- Expand influence within the organization through regular communications to the key business areas
- Ad hoc projects- Lead or support assigned ad hoc projects that required underwriting expertise
Requirements
Education and Certifications
- Bachelor's Degree or commensurate experience required
- Relevant Insurance and Underwriter designations preferred
- Six Sigma or Lean Certification preferred
Experience
- Minimum of 7 years underwriting with at least 3 years in direct underwriting of at least one of the Supplemental Health product areas – 1) Accident (AI) / Critical Illness (CI) / Hospital Indemnity (HI), 2) Fixed Indemnity (FI) / Minimum Value Plan (MVP) / Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC), or 3) Life / Disability (DI)
- Worksite voluntary benefits (AI/CI/HI) underwriting experience preferred
- Group life, short term disability, and long term disability underwriting experience preferred
- Limited Benefit and Gap Product experience preferred
- Experience working closely with a reinsurer preferred
- Experience managed external working relationships with distribution partners, brokers and clients accounts on Supplemental Health products
Travel Required
10 – 15% nationwide travel required, with a minimum of quarterly visits to the BCS office in Oakbrook Terrace if remote
Salary : $101,000 - $125,000
