Must Haves: Must have a BS or MS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (computer engineering not accepted). Must have 5 years of relevant gas turbine experience with a bachelor’s degree. Automotive or aerospace engineering experience is also acceptable.
Position Overview: The Component Design Engineer is responsible for delivering high-quality component and assembly design solutions that meet system and sub-system requirements. The role functions within an Integrated Product Team (IPT) under the Product Lifecycle System (PLS) and follows all applicable Rolls-Royce Management System (RRMS) processes. The engineer ensures technical integration, manufacturability, lifecycle profitability, and supply chain alignment.
Key Accountabilities: Deliver design solutions for components, complex assemblies, and full engines while considering safety, manufacturing capability, product robustness, cost, weight, maintainability, and repair. Provide complete design definition packages (models, documents, and data) to manufacturing teams, project customers, airframers, partners, and analysis groups following Model Based Definition (MBD) standards. Develop and use automated and integrated tools and workflows for repeatable design tasks using house styles, standard features, and standard assessments. Drive Zero Defects by eliminating non-conformance through incorporating manufacturing capability, measurement capability, lean principles, standardization, and deterministic design. Apply Systems Engineering, xFMEA, robust design methods, and design-in-context to ensure right-first-time outcomes. Perform formula-based and automated analyses such as stability, stiffness, weights, balance points, and profiles to validate the design. Create technical documentation that complies with process and data governance requirements. Support through-life supply chain design and profitability by managing non-conformances, drawing updates, repair instructions, technical variants, and manual limits. Plan and manage external design work packages executed by suppliers or design service providers and ensure approval of all designs and documents. Manage product configuration and data integrity throughout the lifecycle. Execute subsystem integration processes to ensure technical attributes meet system requirements.
Required Qualifications & Experience: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent qualification/experience. Strong technical knowledge of mechanical design methodologies and cross-discipline engineering concepts including manufacturing engineering, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, mechanical/thermal analysis, cost engineering, and product definition. Ability to apply logical, analytical, and innovative thinking to complex engineering problems and make balanced decisions. Knowledge of product integrity, certification, and liability frameworks. Membership in a relevant professional engineering organization is preferred (e.g., Chartered status or equivalent). Strong communication and presentation skills at all levels.
