Summary of Responsibilities:

An Oil & Gas, Utilities and Renewables Banking Vice President (“VP”) is a member of a client-facing team within BBVA’s Corporate and Investment Bank. The VP’s primary responsibility is to support U.S. Corporate & Investment Relationship Managers in developing, marketing, and delivering the bank’s wide range of banking products and services to Corporate Clients and Prospects targeted as part of CIB U.S.’s strategy for the respective industry sectors.


The VP will coordinate closely with and support Sector Relationship Managers primarily in the United States, but also Europe and Latin America, as well as Global Product groups to manage all aspects of transaction origination and execution, including idea generation, client pitch and Committee proposal preparation, as well as liaising with Risk, Portfolio Management, Legal, Operations and Finance teams.


Major/Essential Job Duties:

Marketing and Deal Execution

  • Identify and understand client needs, promptly responding to all client requests.
  • Coordinate transaction closings, including management of all documentation and follow-up.
  • Prepare for client meetings, including presentation materials, background information and call plans.
  • Research and evaluate potential new client relationships.


Risk/reward Analysis and Decisions

  • Prepare transaction summaries, Risk-Adjusted-Return analyses and prospect/client business plans for presentation to New Business and Credit Committees, including financial models such as pro-forma financial statements and cash flow projections, risk and mitigants, SWOT analysis, etc.
  • Analyze global relationships, gathering credit facility and revenue data from BBVA subsidiaries, especially those in Latin America.
  • Participate in Credit Committees jointly with Relationship Managers.


Internal Coordination and Problem Solving

  • Conduct joint planning sessions with Product teams including Debt Capital Markets, Corporate Lending & Loan Syndicate, Foreign Exchange, Rates, Trade Finance, Cash management, etc.
  • Coordinate internal procedures with the Credit, Operational and Legal departments.
  • Resolve any financial, administrative and operational issues by working closely with Operations, Middle Office and Business Development.


Information Management and Reporting

  • Perform research and summarize opinions of major equity analysts on products, industries, countries, and economic forecasts.
  • Ensure integrity of domestic/global profitability information gathering for internal team reporting.
  • Maintain the Customer Relationship Management system for pipeline and profitability reporting.


Level of Complexity and Risk Involved:

  • The VP position requires a high level of involvement and responsibility. VPs are responsible for substantial amount of in-depth analysis and research and play a crucial role in deal execution and interaction with clients. Once integrated, a VP will demonstrate a fair amount of autonomy.
  • For each client in the portfolio, the Vice President plays a relevant role in identifying business opportunities that are in line with the capabilities and product and service offerings of the bank.
  • A Vice President must be able to manage team members, engage independently with certain client representatives and help drive transactions and relationships in the desired direction.


Scope of Duties:

Vice Presidents play a critical and indispensable role as members of the Corporate & Investments Banking sector team. VPs support Global Relationship Managers in most of their day-to-day duties and are also expected and encouraged to interact daily with product partners to enhance internal communication and accomplish deliverables.


Additional expectations within the scope of the Vice President role:

  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with internal and external clients.
  • Strong knowledge of finance and accounting.
  • Solid knowledge of banking products and services.
  • Ability to manage against internal and external deadlines
  • Deliver work product with minimum errors (high attention to detail).
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Strong work ethic and high degree of proactiveness.


Skills, knowledge, and abilities/Competencies:

Technical Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5 years minimum of work experience; MBA preferred.
  • Strong analytical and financial modeling skills.
  • Broad understanding of Oil & Gas, Utilities and Renewables industry sectors.
  • Advanced computer skills, particularly in Excel and PowerPoint; Reuters and Bloomberg a plus.
  • Understanding of global economics and markets.
  • Credit Training a plus.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish (the latter is not a necessity, but a plus).
  • SIE, Series 7 Top-Off and the Series 63 (or willing to obtain within 6 months)

  • Excellent communication skills; ability to coordinate with people across different departments and regions (Clients, Product Specialists, Sector Leadership, Risk, Legal, Compliance, as well as colleagues in other geographies)

Management Responsibilities:

The Energy VP will work directly with one or two Senor Bankers. Each VP is responsible for supporting a set number of client accounts within the team’s industry sector(s). They will also mentor, train and lead junior team members.

New VPs are expected to bring along a sense of the dynamics of the industries they will cover, deepen their knowledge of those sectors over time, take ownership of their accounts and will have increasing responsibility in identifying and following up on opportunities with their portfolio of clients.

With respect to this position in our Houston Office, the expected base salary ranges from $160,000 to $180,000. It is not typical for offers to be made at or near the top of the range. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. In addition to salary and a generous employee benefits package, successful candidates are eligible to receive a discretionary bonus.
