Job Summary

The Saw Room Technician is responsible for operating and maintaining various saws and cutting equipment to accurately cut materials such as metals, plastics, and other materials according to shop specifications. The technician will ensure that the cut materials are prepared for further processing, whether that is for assembly, machining, or fabrication. The role involves working with a variety of cutting tools, such as band saws, circular saws, and cold saws, to produce parts to specified dimensions, all while maintaining high safety and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

Set-Up:

  • Set up and calibrate saws and cutting machines, including band saws, circular saws, and cold saws, according to job specifications.
  • Select appropriate cutting blades, saw types, and settings based on material, thickness, and cutting requirements.
  • Secure materials on saw tables or fixtures, ensuring proper alignment and stability during cutting.

Material Cutting:

  • Operate saws to cut metal, plastic, or other materials into required lengths, shapes, or sizes for use in further fabrication or machining processes.
  • Follow blueprints, drawings, or written instructions to ensure materials are cut according to specifications.
  • Adjust cutting speeds, feeds, and blade angles as needed to optimize performance and achieve precise cuts.

Blueprint Interpretation

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications to understand the job requirements.
  • Verify part dimensions and tolerances against customer prints to ensure accuracy.

Quality Control

  • Conduct first-article inspections and in-process quality checks to ensure parts meet strict tolerances using precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, protractors, and gauges.
  • Identify defects or irregularities and make proper adjustments or corrections as needed to ensure quality standards are maintained.
  • Collaborate with the quality control department for final inspections and to resolve any dimensions, tolerances, or quality issues.

Safety and Efficiency

  • Follow all safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, steel-toed safety shoes, and hearing protection while on the shop floor.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment to prevent accidents and ensure efficient operations.
  • Optimize machining processes to improve production efficiency while maintaining quality standards.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Log into all jobs via Global Shop when working on work orders to maintain accurate tracking of labor and materials used.
  • Maintain accurate records of production, including completed work orders, quality documents, and quantities produced.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions, material shortages, or production delays to the supervisor promptly.

Continuous Improvement

  • Actively participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities, including workshops, seminars, and certification programs to enhance job-related skills and knowledge, as required.
  • Suggest improvements to the manufacturing process or machine operations to increase productivity and quality.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned or required to support the team's goals and maintain efficient operations.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience in a saw room, machine shop, or fabrication environment is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience with various types of cutting equipment, such as band saws, circular saws, or cold saws, is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently lift and carry materials weighing 25-50 pounds and perform tasks like standing, walking, bending, and crouching for 8-10 hours per day.
  • Possess strong hand-eye coordination, quick reflexes, and good depth perception for operating machinery, forklifts, and overhead cranes safely.
  • Work comfortably in loud, vibration-prone environments with varying temperatures.
