24/7 Occupational & Emergency Medicine Solutions (24/7 OEMS) is currently accepting applications for an Occupational Health Nurse (Ontario Registered Nurse licence current and in good standing) interested in travel assignments (fly in, fly out) for an Occupational Health clinic in Ontario.

Position Overview

The Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) will provide on-site services to support baseline and pre-employment assessments, periodic assessments and occupational health screening. They will coordinate return-to-work planning and provide case management services as required for workers with occupational and non-occupational injury or illness.

The OHN will provide clinic support to the on-site physician assistants as needed.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Conduct baseline and pre-employment or post hire medical assessments for all employees. Baseline assessments include obtaining a comprehensive health history, physical examination and vision screening. Audiometric testing, spirometry, and blood work will be required with some positions. Functional assessment may be included to align with Bonafide Occupational Requirements of specific roles.
  • Collaborate with OEMS deputy medical directors to determine fitness for work and recommendations for appropriate workplace modifications or modified duties.
  • Provide baseline and periodic health surveillance assessments as required. This would include audiometric and spirometry testing, respirator fit testing, and blood collection for required biological monitoring to comply with legislated requirements in identified similar exposure groups.
  • Collaborate with Community providers to refer and receive chest x-ray and bloodwork results for baseline and periodic screening.
  • Collection of specimens for urine drug and breath alcohol testing as required.
  • Coordinate return-to-work planning for employees who are off work due to both occupational and non-occupational medical illness or injury. This involves appropriate communication and liaison with all stakeholders including employees, human resources representatives, managers, union representatives when applicable, medical treatment providers and insurance providers including the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).
  • Work directly with WSIB and disability insurance carriers as applicable.
  • In consultation with deputy medical directors, and onsite medical personnel where applicable, determine eligibility of claims, fitness to work and coordinate return to work plans
  • Provide clear and concise written and verbal communication to claimants, clients, administrators, doctors, and insurers as required for case management, within the confines of applicable privacy legislation.
  • Where appropriate, request and refer for medical clarification, functional ability assessment and independent medical examination to confirm fitness to work and facilitate safe and timely return to work.
  • Establish and maintain all medical records in compliance with applicable privacy legislation
  • Review claims status and return to work timelines with human resources representatives and or business representatives as required and within the confines of applicable privacy legislation.
  • Work with the OEMS program manager- case management, medical director and other OEMS leadership roles as needed to develop and implement return to work strategies, including suitable modified work plans.
  • The OHN will provide clinic support to the physician assistants as needed, working within the RN approved scope of practice per the College of Nurses of Ontario, including delegated medical acts approved by the 24/7 OEMS Medical Director, individual competence and training in selected skills, urgency of patient condition, and on-site medical resources.

Education/Experience

  • Registered Nurse with active registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Successful completion of an approved Occupational Health Nursing Certification with a minimum of 5 years of experience in disability claims management. Consideration will be made to candidates who are currently enrolled in continuing education towards OHN, with equivalent industry experience of at least 5 years.
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) course (with certification from a nationally recognized provider), advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) is required.
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) or equivalent certification is preferred
  • International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) is an asset
  • Experience in alcohol and drug testing is an asset
  • Preference to candidates with previous experience in emergency nursing, or emergency response in occupational health role.
  • In-depth group benefit and product knowledge and experience working with Third-Party Administrators (Insurance carriers, Occupational Testing vendors, Workers’ Compensation Boards). Previous experience working with WSIB is an asset.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, time management and decision-making abilities are required.
  • Strong planning and organizing skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and performance driven environment as well as to adapt quickly and comfortably to change.
  • Strong oral, written communication and interpersonal skills combined with professional telephone etiquette.
  • Demonstrated analytical and negotiating skills while managing difficult situations, with professional integrity.
  • Knowledge and experience working with union represented workforces is an asset.
  • Strong team player who is also capable of working Independently, demonstrates a positive attitude and a desire to succeed.
  • Familiarity with Windows environment (Word, Excel, Outlook); demonstrated ability to learn and work well with customized computer software, including electronic medical record system such as Cority.
  • Evidence of active participation in professional growth and development activities.

Compensation

  • Daily rate of $775 - $800 overtime averaged for 12 hour/ day (inclusive of 4% vacation pay).
