Director of Nursing (DON) – Long-Term Care | 6-Month Contract
Location: Montrose, NY
Schedule: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Start Date: 2–3 weeks after offer

Compensation Options
- Travel Package: $4020/week= $60/hr on W2 (taxable) $1,620/week per diem (non-taxable)
- Local Package: $3,200/week= $80/hr on W2 (taxable)
Position Summary
The Director of Nursing (DON), under the direction of the Administrator, is responsible and accountable for the delivery of high-quality nursing care on a 24-hour basis. This role provides leadership, operational oversight, and regulatory compliance to support the mission of the New York State Veterans Home at Montrose and to ensure residents achieve and maintain their highest level of physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being.
The DON works closely with the Administrator and Medical Director and participates in decisions related to admissions and resident-related contractual agreements.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and administer nursing services in compliance with federal and state regulations
- Develop, implement, and maintain nursing policies and procedures
- Review all Patient Review Instruments (PRIs) for potential admissions
- Supervise, evaluate, and mentor nursing staff to ensure high-quality resident care
- Oversee Infection Control and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) programs
- Ensure appropriate nursing care supplies and resource utilization
- Maintain departmental statistics and submit monthly reports to the Administrator
- Recruit, interview, and recommend appointment of nursing staff
- Coordinate nursing care through an interdisciplinary team approach
- Serve as a clinical and regulatory resource for nursing standards
- Coordinate nursing student affiliations and training
- Ensure compliance with mandatory education, fire safety, and emergency preparedness
- Lead departmental CQI initiatives and adapt best practices and technology
- Model professionalism, customer service, resident rights, and positive leadership
Minimum Requirements
- Active, unencumbered New York State RN license
- Minimum 2 years of Director of Nursing experience
OR 5 years of nursing management experience in a long-term care setting
- Successful completion of background check and verification of education and employment
- Ability to begin assignment immediately upon contract execution
