SALARY RANGE: 26.99 - 40.49HOURLY
General Summary:
Performs safe and efficient operation of the boiler and chiller plant and other utility systems in compliance with federal, state and local guidelines and Bayhealth policies. This position involves a variety of skilled mechanical work requiring one to make a number of decisions, some that are complex in nature and with a high degree of accuracy. Mechanical skills for equipment repairs, replacement, or installation are required for this position. Work independently or with others to accomplish tasks. The individual may be required to work alternate shifts depending on staffing levels, projects and emergent situations.
Department team members are authorized to have limited access to secured medication rooms to perform duties and responsibilities as defined in this job description. Any staff member requiring limited access to secured medication rooms must have a fully completed and signed Medication Security Agreement for Non-Licensed Personnel form on file and available upon request.

Responsibilities:
- Analyze problems and take appropriate action to ensure continuous and reliable operation of equipment and systems
- Perform hourly boiler and chiller room tours to inspect equipment, computer terminals, switches, valves, gauges, alarms, safety devices, and meters to detect leaks or malfunctions, and to ensure that equipment is operating efficiently and safely.
- Observes and interprets readings on gauges, meters, and charts registering various aspects of boiler and plant operation to ensure that boilers and systems are operating properly. Monitor boiler water, chemical, and fuel levels, and make adjustments to maintain required levels.
- Perform chemical analysis of water samples and adjust amounts of chemicals being used to properly protect equipment.
- Maintains daily logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activities, including test results, instrument readings, and details of equipment malfunctions and maintenance work.
- Completes all assigned work orders meeting established standards, defined by management or Senior Stationary Engineer.
- Completes all assigned Preventative Maintenance tasks, meeting established standards, defined by management or Senior Stationary Engineer.
- Appropriately reports any system deficiencies to management or Senior Stationary Engineer, when system repairs are outside of their abilities to fix.
- Follows all department safe work practices and procedures including use of PPE when required.
- Completes and follows all departmental and organizational permits pertaining to the environment of care and safety. (Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Utility Shutdown, Etc.)
- This role is deemed essential and requires participation in emergencies that are related to weather and facility occurrences. Some activities may include but are not limited to snow removal, storm preparation, and utility outages. The individual may be utilized to support other departments during an emergency. Other duties requiring skills of a like or less demanding nature, etc.
- All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities to include but not limited to: Sweeping, Cleaning, Painting, Assisting other Plant Operations crafts, Unclogging drains.
- Education: High School Diploma or GED ;
- Credential(s): Driver License Driving Record Required. Stationary Engineer/CSB ; Due to insurance carrier requirements, all staff must be at least 21 years of age with a current class D driver’s license with no more than 2 moving violations or accidents in the past 3 years. Current Stationary Engineering license obtained through a recognized city or state testing program or completion of the Bayhealth Stationary Engineer Exam within the first 90 days of employment. (Recertification is required every 2 years.)
- Experience: Required: Three (3) years of operation and maintenance experience in high pressure boilers and associated auxiliary support equipment. (If graduate of a trade school program, one (1) year of operation and maintenance experience in high pressure boilers and associated auxiliary support equipment.)
Preferred: Six (6) years’ experience in high pressure steam and chilled water plant operations.
Preferred Education, Credential(s) and Experience:
- Education: Vocational Degree Associate Degree Interdisciplinary Studies Related field Trade/Vocational Degree in Stationary Engineering or Interdisciplinary Studies that includes HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical.
